Parkour Interest Clubs in High Schools Print E-mail

APK News Patrick Reed writes in with a suggestion for people trying to start High School clubs...

"I started a Parkour Club my junior year at James Madison high school in Northern Virginia. Unfortunately, the club had to be listed as an "interest only" club due to the dangerous nature of Parkour. It doesn't matter though because all we do on club time is agree on when we are meeting next to train. I would suggest to any high schooler to try and start a "Parkour Interest Club" at their school because, depending on how you run the club, it could be a very small time obligation and it is a great leadership position!"

At Fairview High School in Boulder, Colorado, we've had a parkour club for two years now. It's been an awesome experience, and we've got some new members this year, which is really cool.
The biggest issue for us is the obnoxious security guards, because our school has some awesome parkour in the student area and while there's no school rule against it, we always get kicked out when we start parkour tag. When we explained what parkour is to the school administrators, they thought it was really cool... We're hoping to have a demonstration and video at the annual Health Fair here :)

Yeah I'm hoping on starting one my Junior year in highschool. I still have two more years to train and gain knowledge. It would just be the first step to building a community in Central California where the scene of Traceurs is nowhere to be found.

I sent Apk an email about this, i am also starting a club in Livonia,Michigan.
Thanks Patrick. It will help to show my school that other clubs are being started within the US. Arguing that we should have one because britain has them was tough.

I'm at Oakton High, and I am thinking about making a club. Patrick, would you want to cross paths and make a Vienna Parkour team? We could run it.

I was trying to start one at McCallum high school, but because of the "dangerous nature of parkour" we can't have one. Are principle will not even let us have a paintball club besides the fact that there is a league for it.

I've been trying to start one for two years at my suburb of Pittsburgh high school. We have to have a teacher sponsor for student initiated clubs, and because parkour is what it is, no one will help me out. I haven't given up though!!

I gave up on making one, due to my thoughts that I could make a community outside of school. Then, a larger variety of people could join, and you can just tell people in school.

I'm actually thinking as starting one too. I'm in Springdale, Arkansas but there is a really high interest here. We have a gym that we are allowed to train in. Anybody have any tips? I need to get people into it.

This is Patrick. I dont know what pm stands for so i'll just hope you come back to this tomorrow. We havnt started meeting yet this year becuase ive been busy appling to the Naval Academy and i have 4 AP courses to juggle. Im thinking we'll start up again in November during my swim season. We meet in room 119 every other friday right after school and decide what to do. I tell the announcemets people to say when and where we're meeting usually a day or two before the meeting. A guy from oakton who posted earlier Facebooked me and were thinking about starting a vienna team

Killerwombats, in fairfax co., you need to fill out a packet that you can get from a guidance councilor. You make a club constitution, say what your going to be doing in the club (i said we would only be promoting physical activity and nutrition), and you need to fill out a signature sheet. then it is up to some county board that decides what clubs are made and what clubs arnt

Yeah, I'm from Oakton, and I'm thinking about making a Vienna pk team. School clubs are contained, and we can get more people in a non-school related thing. I have a team of oakton runners, and patrick may be in as well. So if you are in the vienna area, let me or him know, and with enough people, we can start something great.
