The most-common complaint from people who have a hard time eating healthy is the lack of convenience and the extra time it takes to prepare healthful meals. Many people see the fast-food restaraunt as the best option when you're on the go. Below are just a few ideas of items you can pick up in a flash at a grocery store or convenience store that help continue your healthy choices, even when you're pressed for time:

From the Grocery Store:

3 oz beef jerky (try to choose the lowest sodium content possible)

2 apples

1/4 cup almonds, cashews or other nuts

1 liter water

 

5 oz sliced turkey or other lunch meat

1 orange

2 cups mixed salad greens (one of those pre-cut bags is great and will probably last 2 meals)

1/4 cup peanuts

2 oz salad dressing

1 liter Gatorade Propel

 

From the Convenience Store: 

Quick and Easy: 

1 Balance Bar

1 sleeve of peanuts

1 liter of water 

 

3 oz beef jerky (lowest sodium again...I know it's basically impossible)

1 apple and 1 banana (if you're lucky and they have them by the counter)

1 sleeve sunflower seeds

1 unsweetened tea 

 

These are merely a template of a few simple ideas, but as you can see there are healthier options no matter where you might find yourself. Hopefully you can realize that time is never an excuse for unhealthy eating, and this will help you continue your healthy choices everyday.

Amazing....I acually have struggling with this cause i work 17 hour days and food is considered a crutch :p

These are great suggestions. As the author notes, the suggestions given are only a few of the possibilities. I am not a nutritionist and like many of my peers I struggle on a regular basis to include healthful food on the run as part of my, often overloaded, daily schedule. Can anyone provide a rubric or any set of guidelines for coming up with more combinations, perhaps the guidelines used to come up with the given suggestions?

I work at a wendy's and i am a senior in highschool so if im not working im either at school or sleeping. I dont have the best eating habits because bassically all i eat is wendy's but they do have some good healthful choices. Maybe grab a salad and some chili or a grilled chicken with yogurt and granola with a bottled water. Its not a planned out diet but its good if your always on the move like me.

i find that after dinner at night is the best time to prepare my lunch and snacks for the next day (whther i'm going to work or uni).  
1) it's really the only convenient time 
2) i'm already full, so i don't snack on what i'm packing and i don't over pack.  
 
plus this way i can make sure i divide everything up into the right serving sizes instead of buying it at a convenience store.  
grocery store and prepacking yourself is so much cheaper too.

Much agreed with most claims, I worked at a local grocery store for four years of my life and I would always pick up most of the things mentioned when I went on break. Since I've quit, I have found myself resorting to fast food again and my body hates me for it. Go the healthy way, you'll be amazed at the results in health, fitness and energy.

anyone know if this is food or diet related but when ever i move my wrist up and down it sounds like the bones are grinding and when i fully extend my leg it cracks?

These suggestions are terrific! So many times have I found myself in the McDeath in the parking lot of my favorite grocery. Instead of taking the same 5-10 minutes it takes to navigate the aisles and self check in the store.

dietcoke doesn't count cuz it still has caffene in it and that dehydrates you. 
take it from me at my low point I was drinking 4 mountain dews a day.

Don't do it. Any "diet" soda is filled with artificial sweeteners like sucralose and aspartame that totally screw up your system. The word "diet" is just a marketing trick, because people think that if there is no sugar it is better for you. Believe me, all that crap can really mess you up.  
You're best just going natural and drinking lots of water and eating fruit. You have no idea how much it helped in cross country when I stopped drinking Coke and instead just carried a water bottle wherever I went... I dropped from a 19:05 to a 18:17 in the 5k. 
 
Besides, it just tastes better.

Does the any kind of nuts part mean any kind at all. I guess im saying would unsalted peanuts be healthier than salted, or any other type of peanut?

Hmm, is subway any good, or would that be taboo? Cause that's the only place that i know of that's somewhat fast-food, but healthy from what I've seen.

I'd drink water, but I can't stand the taste (or lack thereof). What would be the best solution to this? There are little flavor packets I can buy, but I heard those ruin your teeth. A squirt of lemon, maybe?

Water tastes better cold... most of the time anyway. Try getting a really strong bottle fill it half way then freeze it, might want to do that the night before. Then before you go anywhere grab it fill it the rest of the way and you got cold water for a few hours or so.

If you want do what taco448 said about filling the bottle half way but add a small amount of the powder to give it taste. then freeze it and next day add some more water. I do it and it gives it a slight better taste without so much sugar.

another thing you could try if you think you have what it takes(most of you proly can't, i knowi cna't) is do what one of my best friends is doing-go RAW. by RAW i mean NOTHING COOKED AT ALL. NO PASTURIZED FOODS. he started this diet about a month ago and he has noticed he has alot more energy, can funtion on less sleep, and feels like he could run aorund the world. He said it is very hard and the only advice i can give is-try it, research it online, theres ways to make anyhting raw, it takes more time, but he told me it is worth it.

Thats the cool thing about bananas and nuts, you can take em with you, they fit right in your pack so if you get hungry on the go you can just pop one out and take a quick bite.

It's funny, reading about healthy food makes me more hungry than reading about unhealthy foods such as a fatty ham doused in honey or a big mac. Thanks for this! I've ben trying to eat better while on the go.

I can't stand McDonalds....but 2 things I recommend from there.....1 you can get from anywhere.... 
 
a bottle of water... 
 
The other thing they have thats cheap.....and good... 
the fruit and walnut salad. 
 
Other than that....I agree with this article....simple.easy and convenient

Was also wondering about the sodium in the beef jerky. The jerky I have has nearly 100% daily content of sodium in 3oz (91%). And if I were to have one of these meals a day, that'd be twice the sodium content I need daily. Is this bad? Is there better jerky that I should be able to find?

I like these ideas! I find when I'm pressed for time I'll run to subway instead and end up spending soo much! When I actually take myself to the grocery store and pick up things that are healthy and tasty I find myself making 5 meals out of $10. Really great ideas!
