Due to a minor sprained ankle and frigid weather, Demon's drill for February is a little late. We're glad he's recovered, and as for the drills, better late than never!

 

Most rails we encounter while doing parkour are about the same height. They don’t require you to think about getting height. But sometimes we encounter walls or rails that are a little taller. With practice and repetition, you can have the ability to kong rails as tall as your height. This can replace slower and less efficient pop vaults or side vaults.

The Method:

Step One: Find a handicap ramp with a progressively taller rail on one side.

Step Two: Start out practicing your kong vaults at the beginning of the handicap ramp (a standard rail height). Get warmed up and comfortable with this height.

Step Three: This is a simple drill; all it takes is practice and repetition. Once you are warmed up, slowly start to move along the handicap rail, practicing kongs a little higher each time.

As you figure out the proper coordination, you will be able to kong higher and higher. I have built up my level to kong my height, and I have seen people kong over their height. There is no reason you can’t do this too if you put in the time.

Tips for kong height:

- The move starts with a strong jump. You must jump almost straight up to achieve maximum output from your legs. Make sure you jump before your hands hit the rail.

- As you are traveling up from your jump, push the rail with your hands. Think about it. If you coordinate your jump and your arm push together, you will go significantly higher than if those key movements were working independently.

- If you are having trouble getting a good push with your arms, dips and pushups will help you build up the strength needed for this specific movement.

Sweet, been wondering how to kong alot higher. I didnt know you had to jump up thought it was more of a dive or is that for smaller objects?

to fishburn: what i do is with something a bit higher than your weist. it helps if you know the monkey vault pretty well, when you jump, put your hands at the edge of the obstacle and work on height and distance and just putting your feet on the obstacle. then just inch your way further and further and you should hav it in no time. 8)

i can kong/monkey walls and things that are taller than me. just keep practicing. these tutorials really help.
