Monkey/Kong Vault PDF Print E-mail
Thursday, 23 February 2006

The Monkey Vault is a way to pass over an object where both hands are placed on the object and it is apporached straight on. It then appears as though your feet pass between your hands over the object, although they do not, they pass "between" where you hands would have been if you left them on the object, however you remove your hands as your body is passing over the object. The Kong vault is meant to describe a Monkey vault where your feet leave the ground well before your hands ever reach the object, however in practice all Monkey vaults should be done this way to maintain momentum. Kong = "Big Monkey". Sometimes further embellished as "Diving Kong", the priciples all fall under the French Saut du Chat.

Anyone have tips on how to kong narrow objects/rails, without ending up doing a tiny monkey vault and killing your momentum, It is very difficult to get into a real dive over these objects

I don't understand how to spread ur legs open like that with being ok about it. Every time I try a kong vault I go monkey cuz it feels like if I spread out my legs I'm gonna fall on my face!!!

kongs are one of the few vaults i have trouble with, i have a constant fear of plowing my face into the ground.....any tips to ge over that???

dude just start small... once your monkey vaults are good, just start going over bigger and bigger stuff. really if you just get one good one, your confidence will shoot up. also, your confidence in your rolls will help too- it takes away alot of the bite of a fall

when i started, i naturally swung my legs around a little, not bringing them straight through my arms. though this was bad form, it helped my confidence enough to start concentrating on my form...

just a question about the animation:
are you supposed to keep your shoulders and head angled towards the ground after you push off with your hands?

14. 10-11-2008 17:40

nah - i noticed that too - in the animation he just kind of floats back to a landing position. you push with your hands.

Firerunner 16 - i learned on those metal (or wood too) tables at parks. you can usually drag them so your landing on grass, and their pretty short - you dont have to dive alot. plus they actually force you to dive a bit because of the bench, which is good for later.
