The Samson stretch is a great precurser to any workout, combining balance and flexibility throughout the entire body.

If you cannot view this APK video you may need to enable Javascript or install Flash

1. Interlace your fingers and raise them overhead so your palms are facing the ceiling, engaging your shoulders up and towards your ears.

2.) Step forward into a lunge position with the knee of the rear leg touching the ground.

3.) Stretch your hands up, and stretch/sink into the lunge. Look up towards the ceiling.

4.) Maintain balance and hold for 3-5 seconds, repeat on other side.

stretches are not all about form, its about feel, if it is stretching something then it is probably right. its always good to have someone tell you if you are doing it right sometimes though

Try these stretches after doing about 15 minutes of non-stop abdominal combinations.

I worry about your knee position in that stretch, samson. Whenever the knee pases that far forward of the ankle, it causes strain. If you can take a longer stride, you can still sink in the hips and get an excellent stretch while protecting the knees, or is there something I'm not seeing about this stretch?

knee should be directly above ankle to avoid injury.

I understand that the "knee should be directly above the ankle to avoid injury" but have you seen some of the parkour moves/jumps/catches, etc... your butt is going to hit your ankles and I suspect you'd do better get your knees ready for it.

That's easy to tell how to.

1. Make sure you have enough room.
2. Stand straight up and raise your hands overhead, interlace your fingers with your palms pointing upward.
3. Tilt your head back so you are looking up at the back of your hands or into the sky/ceiling.
4. Sink into a lunge and hold the position for 3-5 seconds.
5. Repeat with other leg.
6. Continue for desired amount of sets(set being that you did it once with each leg).

awesome stretch shame you look so ridiculous when you do it :p

the knee should never pass in front of the ankle, the joint will be too open and susceptible to injury if any lateral movement/strain is experienced. Bear in mind this is a static pose, not a movement, such as experienced whilst practising parkour. Protect your joints at all times whilst training, they have to last you a long time.

:-) :grin this stretch is super rad, not as intensive as the back bridge but VERY effective

I've heard that if the knees are *very* fit and have been exercised for a long time to build up strength, then it's OK so long as the knee moves in the same direction as the toe. That aligns the bend / compression of the knee in its naturally strong direction. I've seen people dance tango, fence Italian rapier, do Hindu squats, and etc. with knees over toes, or even sinking to the knee's fully bent position. Not saying it's *always* OK. Just that it's probably a "it depends" kind of thing (as with a lot of things).

28. 04-13-2008 08:45

how long will this warm up take

29. 04-23-2008 03:27

Samson stretch isn't supposed to be a warm-up, more like a warm-down, stretching out your joints, muscles etc. after the push-ups, pull-ups, L-pull-ups etc. or whatever else you choose to do.

Haha, it looks really funny, but it feels really nice on your back. :grin

34. 07-19-2008 09:31

oh, this one feels really good.

35. 08-07-2008 05:22

to slydera, if you can do a lunge correctly, then you can do this, just put your hands in the air thats the only different thing

36. 08-07-2008 12:50

This seems pretty straight forward to me.

37. 08-24-2008 01:15

this is similar to a bow-stance stretch in wushu, except for the arm placement and movement.

38. 09-06-2008 09:33

just a lung with your hands laced above your head? :? :) :grin ;) 8) :p :roll :eek :upset :zzz :sigh :? :cry :( :x :) :grin ;) 8) :p :roll :eek :upset :zzz :sigh :? :cry :( :x :) :grin ;) 8) :p :roll :eek :upset :zzz :sigh :? :cry :( :x :) :grin ;) 8) :p :roll :eek :upset :zzz :sigh :? :cry :( :x :) :grin ;) 8) :p :roll :eek :upset :zzz :sigh :? :cry :( :x :) :grin ;) 8) :p :roll :eek :upset :zzz :sigh :? :cry :( :x :) :grin ;) 8) :p :roll :eek :upset :zzz :sigh :? :cry :( :x :) :grin ;) 8) :p :rol

There's a good stretch, although you look rediculous while doing it.

I think I'll warm-up before leaving home.

41. 11-17-2008 13:59

44. 01-10-2009 19:08

i don't mean to critisize, but he looks like he hyper-extends his back when he does this stretch.

45. 01-17-2009 19:25

Well that doesn't look hard at all so far I can do 50 elavated Push ups (Your feet are on an objectpropping your feet up on something) and 10 pull ups I don't do them often I can do 5 hand stand push ups I'm still practicing and I can hold a hand stand for about 1 minute so far
trying to raise the bar each time

47. 04-12-2009 07:58

seriously people, enough with the emoticons....

and for one of the first few to comment, its not sampson's stretch (implying ownership) its a title, and the guy doing it isnt named sampson (unless coincidentally)....and to the other people saying "wtf this isnt a warm-up!!!" its more a stretch, hence the name, and stretching is good if you dont wanna hurt yourself

48. 05-30-2009 21:38

hmm... kind of a weird streach.

49. 07-14-2009 11:16

funny but good 8) :) :grin ;) 8) :p :roll :zzz

50. 07-18-2009 03:18
