Tuck Jump to Silent Landing Print E-mail

The tuck jump to silent landing is a parkour specific spin-off of an already useful exercise, the tuck jump. Tuck jumps build explosive jumping power while the silent landing develops the eccentric leg strength and coordination needed for stronger, safer landings. In addition, the goal of silence helps a practitioner focus on proper landing technique.

Why is it that i can get the silent landing when i jump over things, but not when i'm doing just doing standing tuck jumps? My landing seems about the same to me? Has anyone else had this problem?

ya idk y that is i think it has something to do with forward motion or something

ive only just started parkour so i could be wrong but im thinking that it might be that the forward motion causes the wind rushing past your ears to drown out the sound of you landing so it seems like your landing silently when actualy your not :)

any tips on how to get that silent landing?
I tried changing the angles of my feet as I landed and everything but I couldn't seem to get it silent...

land on your toes and drop yourself slowly and it should b fairly silent

absorb the impact mostly by bending your knees and tensing your muscles while goin into a crouch. gets me silent every time. hope it helped :)

no offense guys but i think we're missing the point. the purpose of the exercise is to learn proper landing technique. there is no way to land completely silently; it's a basic physics concept that when two things collide (in this case your feet and the ground), the impact produces sound. the point is that in trying to be silent, you learn both proper landing technique and focus, which will help to maintain forward momentum as well as helping to keep you from hurting yourself. Yeah - it may be easier for us short people - esp. girls - but one trick I've learned is to land like a cat. Try dropping a cat and see what happens. They land on the tip of their paws - nice and solid, no wobbling - and bend their legs slightly. This makes your legs act like springs and absorb the impact. Try not to let your ankles wobble either, this can make you noisier. It also helps if you just pretend you're a ninja - just the mindset can make your landings quieter. By being quiet and landing in this way, you can keep from twisting your ankles or breaking your legs.

In terms of moving quietly, there is a noteworthy subtlety to it. In my martial art experience, there is an excercise caled "Hai Pu" where one walks with the knees turned in and kept pressed together. One's arms are kept up in front, while the feet describe outward crescent-like patterns. The idea is to learn to move quietly. Anyway, kind of made me look like a jackass until I realized that the exercise teaches you that in order to move silently the feet must land before you shift your weight forward onto them. Perhaps the same principle is why the forward jump can be quieter. :)

yo i am at intermediate lvl so i gues those are for me

this is to test your landing and if you CAN land silently while jumping in one spot your impact WILL BE LESS

Alright this is what I think the silent landing part comes in. It impossible to get a pure silent landing... but the quieter the landing the more controll you have. My advice is that the motion is a jump, tuck in the air, untuck, then as you land tuck again. Work down the last tuck until you can land quietly without fully squatting. If someone out there can confirm this great, but feel free to correct me otherwise
