I have a simple rule about this, if you get a chance to train with a legend, do it.
Dan John is unquestionably one such legend. To begin to understand the giving power of this man, look at his website, particlurly at the free books he offers, including a 97 page manuscript on weight lifting and strength training that will go head to head with any information you can buy! Or, check what he charges for training sessions at his own house (hint, some things you just can't buy). He does have a product for sale, a DVD on lifting which I will be reviewing. If today was any indicator, this DVD is worth about a bazillion dollars. Today Jesse Woody (Gearsighted) and I (M2) got to be "taught how to teach" (even better than just learning) the Olympic Lifts by Dan. Dan's coaching is brilliant in it's simplicity and very much parallels the ideals of Parkour: If it works, use it, if it doesn't, toss it. In teaching weight training, he has you there with weights in your hands almost the whole time. Much like Parkour, where the only way to learn it isn't the hours of theory and discussion, but the hours of pounding the pavement. Thanks to Tom Brose of Crossfit DC for hosting this event, and of course a huge thanks to Dan John who is a great, great guy and an unbelieveable coach / trainer.
