Reporters from The New York Times recently attended a jam in New York City and wrote a great article featuring Nikkie Zanevsky, recently back from China. The article also features Ann Kaczka, Ryan Irish, Sha Mialimm Ak, and Michael "Pyro" Araujo from NYPK. The video goes on to feature the basics of Parkour with Nikkie narrating and explaining.

Nice job, everyone involved, and hopefully this can get Parkour some good exposure in New York City. Thanks to Peter Gerstenzang, author of the article.

The NY Times is a great way to spread the good word. That video was so much fun! (I love those crazy kids, we've got a couple of them back home ;) )

i disagree pretty heavily that men and women should train things differently....

With proper work women can be just as explosive and powerful as men. Anyone ever see female gymnasts? Just as strong on their bodyweight skills and just as brutally powerful on their jumps. While a grown woman is a bit different, this is only a minor change.

That whole "center of gravity" stuff Ann was talking about just SOUNDS correct, imho, but it's not.

A proper heel drive will allow women to get their CoG up in the air for that perfect kong. Both women and men can do aerials, kongs are just as simple

(nikkie here) chris, i mostly agree. as you know, i've never advocated separate/different training for women. in this interview, however, we were asked to focus on the differences... you can't argue that there ARE innate differences that make certain things easier, depending on body type (and some of those are gender-specific). i don't think anyone should train ONLY what's innately easier, but we DO have varying advantages to begin with, wouldn't you say? sure, women can be as explosive, but in some instances, a woman might need to train longer or differently to perfect the same move as a man.

i absolutely agree, i just think the way it is expressed in this video, whether intentional or not, leads women to believe they are supposed to train differently or not do certain movements because they are more geared towards men. Similarly, it looks like intricate rail work, from this video, is something that only women should do.

I meant no offense, i just want any women reading/viewing this to understand that that was a misrepresentation -- at least in my eyes...

Can 'phreaknite' explain what "proper work" means to me. the phrasing of it seems a bit odd. what is this 'proper work' you talk of?
