i can almost get this, i just need to get more parallel to the ground, this reminds me of a martial arts move i know, makes it easier to learn.

I used to be able to do this pretty well with a swingthru, but I stopped for a long time and when I tried again I landed on my face.

This is one of 3 ways to do the move - the wushu style take off. To make it more gymnastics like, the leg should be kicked up to horizontal in front and used to get height and twist with the shoulders. The capoeira style of this move leads with the upper body, basically just leaning sideways, then swinging the arms and twisting real fast. I've found that everybody will have one of these methods that is easier and the other 2 they will have trouble with.

Is there any similarities between this move and the butterfly kick as far as the takeoff is concerned?

I really like the way that they practice butterflies in wushu. This video may help: www.youtube.com/watch?
v=geix2cdeU90. Learning a super smooth butterfly will definitely make putting the twist in much easier. Once you have a butterfly, you're probably going to want to do a lot of practice with a crash pad just to get over the mental aspect of doing a barrel roll in the air once you're horizontal. I think of the "dip" as that fact that it is necessary to lift in a way that sets you up for a good arch in the air, which will keep your body level to the ground.
