This morning I was out walking my dog, Piper- she’s very cute. I live on a pretty busy street, especially the morning rush to NYC. So we sprint down to the end of my driveway, stop a few times to sniff out the chipmunks (me, not Piper) and then wait for traffic.

When there’s a break in the traffic, we head across for the sidewalk. It’s a 40MPH zone, so figure most people are doing about 50! On the other side, there’s a white line, 3 more feet of pavement, a curb, 3 feet of grass (dirt really), then a sidewalk. The dog’s favorite yard is just across the street, so as soon as we start to cross she’s off like a shot. For someone with 6” legs she runs like the wind. We get almost across the street, and I decide to make a long diagonal jump for the sidewalk, “to reach” … nothing new, I do this every day. Today however, I stopped in mid air. I looked at the Dog. I looked at the traffic both ways. I felt my legs tucked up under me. I looked at the grass past the sidewalk, I looked at the curb I was going over. I saw the texture of the dirt before the sidewalk. I saw the different colors of leaves on the grass. I felt the tendons in my right leg as I extended my foot, aligned to the sidewalk. I thought about motion, about how my dog wasn’t thinking about anything, about how great exercising makes me feel. Then all was normal, dog running in an arc around my right, cars rushing behind me, absorbing the impact with my right leg and pushing powerfully off with a redirection of momentum down the sidewalk. Even the dog was in tune, she ran right past her favorite yard, as fast as I’ve seen her go.

People often overuse the term “flow” which was coined, long before Parkour became popular, to describe a state that an athlete achieves in the middle of intense performance. To me, Parkour is a state of mind, and finding that state of “flow” is a part of what makes “Parkour”. So I ask you, “How long is Parkour?” This morning, I did Parkour for about .3 of a second, and it was great.

I love it! way to be in the moment. Although while reading your story I was expecting some sort of tradgic turnout, like you or poor Piper was going to get hit by a car. So I was releaved at your happy ending :grin

Nice :] I got "into the flow zone" [oh man I used both] while doing a handstand up on a wall yesterday. My focus level was just ++ and all the sound around me just became muffled.

Or that could have been the blood rushing to my head.

Nice, I got that one day while I jumped over a bed of vines, about 10 feet long going downhill. While I was over the vines, I felt powerful, and like I was literally flying but I only really got that feeling the first time I attempted going over the vines. Except the feeling lasted like 0.25 secs. I haven't got that feeling ever since then.

agree... my friends (who don't practice parkour.. bunch of gamers) all feel it's just a bunch of jumping around.. it's not.. it's the freedom to go beyond those obstacles that hold you back... whether it be a rail, or a mindset.... it's about confidence, determination, and one's will!!!

I've done this about 3 times. One time was today, I was practising jumping over a picnic table plus a trashcan on its side (average hieght is 3 feet and its 5 1/2 feet long) when I landed on the trashcan flew off and hit part of my lower back on the corner of a picnic table (I could probably show you the mark 2 weeks from now). After a few minutes of taking a break I decided I wouldn't let the obstacle get the best of me so I tried 1 more time and cleared it with about 1 foot to spare. Just as I flew over the trashcan everything went into slowmotion and stayed that way for a few seconds after I landed staring at the table.

... damn do I need to proofread, this should have said at the beginning: I was practising jumping over a picnic table and a trashcan on its side, when I tried to jump over it I landed on the trashcan, flew off and hit a lower part of my back on the corner of a picnic table.
