Callus Care PDF Print E-mail
Thursday, 17 January 2008

This is a How-To article on avoiding a potentially painful situation - torn calluses. With lots of Parkour training, pull-ups, and climbing, calluses will develop, and need to be maintained to avoid painful tears. Read more to find out how to deal - Caution - slightly graphic pics.

So, you've trained hard enough to build up some massive calluses - congrats! But, be wanred, if you rip one off it will hurt like a mother#$#%$!!. To avoid the painful tears, you need to shave then with a callus remover, available from several companies and available at just about any pharmacy / drugstore and at Amazon. Please be careful as these things are basically a holder for a razor blade, and the balde is extremely sharp (duh!).

Here's what it looks like when you don't shave your calluses and one rips -

So, instead, get a calluse shaver

And get to it.

 Shaving Calusses to prevent tears

Read the directions in the package that came with your shaver, most importantly do this after a nice long shower so the skin is nice and soft.

Now, if you do have a torn callus, get out the fingernail clippers (be sure to clean / sterilze them first) and trim the torn piece. Once should be enough to teach you to shave your calluses regularly!

im saying this isn't useful but i was a gymnast for nearly 9 years and coached for 3 of those years. we always just tore them off and put chalk in them... but that's just me

well, that certainly works too, if your definition of works is "wait till it's broken" :P

just scrape them off with your fingernails when you are in the shower.

as long as you keep the rip relatively clean whatever you do is okay

ok but kinda pointless in my opinion, just let them rip and deal with it, I feel its a good test of mind over matter when you have a bunch of rips and you just keep training. maybe thats just me though

I would suggest also pouring rubbing alcohol or salt over the fresh skin. Burns like a marketfather but it sterilizes the area and dries out the skin underneath, toughening it and speeding healing. Ancient Ballerina Secret. ;)

This makes alot of sense. I do Martial Arts and I was learning Iron Palm technique. You condition your hands to make them strong. Calluses develop and sometimes, when raking gravel or small rocks with your hands, you can tear calluses on the jagged edges.

i use a nail filer to smooth mine out regularly.

and also push my finger nail into them to try and keep them soft.

I am a paramedic but new to parkour, becareful if you are sharing training equipment with open wounds, in the rockclimbing gyms there have been increase in MSRA, look it up it is nasty. If you are going to bandage it later, get a tegaderm, which will assist it in healing faster, no scab forms and they stay clean too.
