Yes, Water. No other substance on earth deserves the place of the first Superfood in our nutrition section!

All living things (on this planet anyway) require hydration, and that means water. Water is second only to oxygen for human life. We can go a long time without food, but only a few days without water.

Humans are composed of roughly 50 to 70% water. It is part of our muscle structure. It is our cooling system, our cleansing system, and acts asa transport for many of our body's nutrients. Without water even the blood begins to thicken and can't carry oxygen to the cells.

Ok, I get it, drink some water when I'm thristy.

No! If you're feeling thirsty, you're already dehydrated! Active people especially need to drink water on a regular basis to maintain hydration levels. the minimum recommendation is 8 glasses per day, plus one glass for every half hour of exercise. So for an active Traceur that could be a minimum of 10 glasses a day! Minimum!

Well, I had 3 cokes, 2 cups of coffee, and an orange juice, so that's 6 right there. Nope! Anythign containing caffeine doesn't count towards your 8 glasses, because caffeine is a diarhetic, which means it actualy absorbs water out of your body. the orange juice counts, but has lots of sugar, which causes an undesirable glycemic reaction (not to worry about a glass or two a day, but not 8!).

Water should be drunk as: water. That's it, plain and simple. Anything else just isn't water.

Sports drinks give me energy. no, they give you a sugar rush, read the ingredients, most are "as bad" as soda, meaning huge amounts of sugar, ad some even have caffeine! Now, there is a time for sports drinks, which is immediately before, during, and after exercise, when an isotonic drink will be absorbed faster than plain water by the body, and also help to replenish minerals lost through sweat, but there is a time and place for these drinks, and they should be used for their purpose. drinking Gatrodae will not make you an athlete, unless you plan to join the fatolympics.

More later after I check my facts :P

just a little thing, if you do become dehydrated sip the water slowly and take a breath between each sip, dont down it, this could cause you to throw up and dehydrate you even more.

I was reading about the seven most pervasive medical myths on bbc.co.uk the other day and they actually addressed this issue. Apparently it is completely false that humans should drink 8 glasses of water a day. While it is necessary to maintain hydration, it is not necessary to gorge on H2O. Unfortunately the article didn't explain what the recommended daily amount should actually be, but I would believe that traceurs following a regular practice regimen might find the above info applicable to their physical needs.

Incidentally the article also discussed caffeinated beverages, stating that tea and coffee can count towards your hydration goals despite the caffeine.

I think that would work okay, as long as you don't add a lot of sugar and stuff to it.

how big should each glass be I mean there are tons of different sizes

I can see by some of the posts above that many have my problem. I don't like water. Just plain water? It's great when it's cold and I'm really thirsty, but just to drink on through the day, or worse, with meals? >ick!

Caffeine is a xanthine, which, apart from being a diuretic, also inhibits the reabsorption or sodium ions in your kidneys, making you even thirstier than you were before. I personally don't drink anything with caffeine after 3PM. Not only does it keep you from getting dehydrated, it helps a lot with keeping your sleep cycle normal.

bjcollier, try adding a slice of lemon, orange, or lime to your water (but nothing else) to have a better flavor.
Water can also keep you from overeating. I heard that when you're stomach growls a bit, you're not hungry, it's just that your stomach is used to being so full all the time. So instead of munching on fast food, drink water (it fills it up).

No, you really don't need to drink 8 glasses a day. The rule for how much water you need is the rule for quite a few things in Parkour. Listen to your body. It'll tell you when you're thirsty. Then you can drink. (not to say you can't drink any other time)
Also, about soda and caffeine, while it's not very good for you, and certainly not as good as water, it doesn't actually absorb water from your body. You just pee out more of it than you would ordinary water. So it still hydrates you, just not nearly as adequately.

i can tell you the importance of water...i saw a lot of recruits fall out because of dehydration when i was in boot camp, and even Marines afterward. it's not so much a set amount you need to drink as much as just keeping your water levels constant. hydration is key if you don't want kidney or brain damage. also, water will make your body better able to transport nutrients and thus you'll feel more energetic.
however, beware of hyponatremia. if you drink too much water your mineral count will drop dangerously low, and this can be just as dangerous as dehydration.

happy hydration!
