Basic Handstand Press Print E-mail

Learning the different presses to handstands is one of the best ways to train for an awesome strength-to-weight ratio and absolutely killer core strength and stability.

1.) Stand with feet together or slightly narrower than shoulder-width.

2.)Bend at the hips and place your hands slightly in front of your feet at a bout shoulder-width apart, fingers spread.

3.)Start leaning forward onto your hands, raising up on your toes, the goal is to get your hips above your shoulders.

4.)As your weight shifts, your feet will begin to raise off the ground, continue to slowly shift your weight until you can statically lift your legs up by extending your hips, to bring your feet, legs and hips above your shoulders.

5.)Even if you can't get the press, working the static lean and trying as hard as you can to press a handstand is excellent core-training.

I can only do it with help from a wall because I can't get the balance yet, but I've only been working on it for a couple of weeks, so I'll keep trying. :-)

the wall definitely helps. it takes care of the balance part so that you can focus on the form and the strength part of it

If you didn't grow up in gymnastics (and even if you did), these are amazing videos of the press to handstand. I can only do a handstand leaning against a wall (not pressing to it and not freestanding)... and even that I can only hold for about 45 secs - 1 minute. Is there a way to train the muscles (other than doing this)required for pulling the hips up above the shoulders and extending legs to follow?

lol i just started and i can do it

17. 04-18-2008 06:38

:x well not really domino, but do some shoulder workouts will help hold you up longer, but as for the balance, i found that the stronger my abs and back get the easier these get. But the biggest thing of all is to stretch like a mother! its all way to easy to tear something doing these, if your stiff and not used to it.

I think i might use the help of a wall first because it helps to focus on key points like the strength :)
ill get it soon :).

i'm 6 foot some, some it's really hard for me to do a handstand. any advice?

20. 09-24-2008 15:34

Yeah the wall is key. I do this 3 times aday against a wall for about 30-45 seconds (jumping from one leg to wall).

21. 01-04-2009 07:24
