Red Bull Freerunning Competition PDF Print E-mail
Tuesday, 09 October 2007

Red Bull held a Freerunning competition in Vienna Austria this past weekend. Congrats to Victor Lopez from Los Angeles, California who took second place in this worldwide event! First place went to Ryan Doyle, who broke his leg on a final move ... I think overall Victor is better off :) There's a link to RedBull's site here And some videos mentioned on the forums in this thread . It seems that they used an excess of padding to allow for "huge moves" instead of relying on the natural beauty of Freerunning done on natural surfaces. Too bad as there were many talented people there who do amazing stuff anywhere they go!

Two people now have noted that this seems like a jab at Ryan. Ryan is an awesome athlete, anyone who hasn't seen it needs to check out  his video "Crazy day at the park " in which he throws a ridiculous amount of hard tricks. Injuries are not a joke, especially a broken leg, and we wish him a speedy recovery.

As for it being a jab, it is a statement - this competition seemed to encourage large tricks, this is not the spirit of Freerunning at all and it's sad to see a competition where someone gets injured. Of course it happens in skiing, skating, almost any sport, but the idea here seemed to be "Go big or go home".

so... supporting competition is front page?

Freerunning world events is front page, does it say somewhere that APK supports this? We support something similar but better done, but that's not the issue. You'd be better off making a suggestion which has some value than an empty negative comment. If you want to change the world you have to do more than launch a feeble complaint.

Further, we DEFINITELY support our friends who were there!

Sure most Traceurs are against competition, but honestly, who cares. This event was a great opportunity for the Free Running community. There was absolutely no competetive atmosphere present, which is really what we care about. I'm still against parkour competitions, but I see Free Running "events" as the future.

The thing that makes me think twice is that the winner broke his leg. that's a lot of rehab and recovery for something that might not have happened if he wasn't competing.

yeah after that post i regretted putting in like that. i understand it was shot off with negativity and thats just as damaging as competition would be in my mind. So I apologize.

I thought it was kind of common knowledge that most of the admins on APK were for competition, I saw the comp and it seemed basically like people throwing big crap just to impress and it didn't even have any fluidity.

Kind of seems like a jab at Ryan Doyle there M2 which is kinda uncool considering injuries are never fun, but it probably just came off that way. anyway I say this comp was kind of balls, no offense to the athletes that performed in it.

how can u win a contest if you dont go big i mean really theres no point to have one if there not going to throw new tricks

Showing Control

Gymnasts don't win by doing big skills and barely landing them

More often than not the Gymnast that Has perfected one skill will win over the one throwing a new skill that they haven't perfected.

What's the reason for a competition like this? The performers (no offense) looked more like performing monkeys just doing something for a crowd than an athlete. I am against competition but this one could have gone A LOT better...

Congrats to Victor. I am looking for contact info (email, phone) for Victor. We are producing a Commercial featuring Parkour in his home town of LA and it would be great to have him in it. Victor this Job does pay money!
