Responsibility - Traceur Down PDF Print E-mail
Monday, 13 August 2007

As Traceurs, Freerunners, and people, we all have certain responsibilities. They start with ourselves, how we act, how we treat ourselves, and radiate outward to how we treat others, how we handle situations, and our environment. Sometimes we make bad choices, unfortunately this is one of those stories. This weekend in Denver a Traceur was seriously injured. "Spoon" as his friends (myself included) call him made a bad judgment, went into a situation without thinking it through, and will have very unfortunate and serious consequences. I won't go into the story in detail, you can read that in the Denver Jam report, it takes up the majority of the page. Spoon was climbing with his hands pressed against glass. We need to remember that Parkour is not only about our own capabilities, but the capabilities of our surroundings to support us without damage to structures, to other people and to ourselves.  Please read more as this is a serious wake up call for the dangers of not being aware and making sound decisions while doing Parkour / Freerunning. As for responsibility, the University has been notified, and full responsibility for damages claimed- with full restitution to follow. Please "read more".

Spoon saw someone doing a stem climb (press climb) in a hallway, one side made of glass. HE thought that the person before him must have been pressing on the glass, when actually they were pressing the frames of the windows. This costly mistake leaves him with a very severe cut (think severed tendons) in his right wrist. He was taken by ambulance to the hospital, and then flown back to Arizona on an emergency flight to get him home for surgery as quickly as possible.I would like it to be known that this was an accident, a bad judgment that was not done with bad intent, but rather just not well thought out. Spoon's concern from the moment of the incident was that he doesn't wish to give our disciplines a bad name. He loves doing Parkour and doesn't want to harm its reputation in any way. Fortunately, the police report filed at the University lists only an accident, no details and no mention of ill will. We have spoken to the police department and the facilities management of the university and they will let us know the total so that we can send a check to pay for the damages. In this we have taken full responsibility, and done as much as possible to make amends. Spoon is aware of this and takes full responsibility for his actions, he is humble and apologetic for his lack of judgment. It is very fortunate that he pulled back instead of falling forward into the stairwell and onto the remaining glass.

We all wish him a speedy recovery, although I fear it will be along and hard road back to full functionality and strength. Certainly he has strength of character that is admirable.

Let us also be thankful that this was the only injury bad enough to warrant a hospital trip on Saturday. Many things could have easily produced bad head injuries or broken legs or worse. People were good about knowing their abilities and not doing things they weren't sure they could do.

Nice job taking responsibilty, I applaud you.
I always tell people, that yell at me to get off, that I will pay if anything breaks and is very unlikly beacuse I am careful of what I train on.

Not sure if this helps, but I think it would be a good idea to chip in a few bucks to the person fronting the repair bill. Whether it be M2 or anyone else taking responsibility, but I really dont mind giving a few dollars to the cause. You know, just so nobody is punished for something they stepped up for.

And for spoon, Sorry man, I wish you a full and quick recovery.

Spoon is fully prepared to take care of this. I'll get the cost from the school, when I do, if it's outrageous we might make a fund, otherwise Spoon wll cover it, and APK can help a bit if needed.
