We all know how important repetition is in parkour, but how many of us really do something 100 times as part of our regular training? But is this even the best way to utilize the idea that “Repetition is very important”? While repetition is vital, we must not forget that variety is the very thing that makes parkour so dynamic and challenging. Without an endless supply of obstacles of all different shapes, sizes, materials, angles, magnitudes, difficulties, and more, we would be very limited in how we could move. Because this is not the case, we must train our bodies to be able to perform similar movements on all types of obstacles.
Instead of repeating the same jump over and over 100 times, I have added a new type of training to my regimen. Theme training. So what exactly is theme training? Simply put, theme training is about picking a general movement common to parkour and training it in every way, shape, and form possible. In this type of training, repetition on the same obstacle is not the goal. Instead, we are looking to broaden our capabilities for the movement by adapting and performing the movement to every unique situation we can. Theme training can be used for any movement in parkour including vaults, wall passes, climb ups, traverses, rolls, and more.
The benefits of theme training are more than you may expect at first. Obviously, theme training is good because it promotes countless repetitions of a particular movement. These repetitions are very important for mastery of a skill. In addition to the repetition, theme training is beneficial because it makes you consciously seek out situations to apply your theme of the day. This leads to even better mastery because not only are you repeating a movement over and over, but you are also adapting it to all kinds of unique situations. Creativity is boosted and you are more likely to try things you never thought to try.
In this month’s Demon’s Drill video, I demonstrate my day of theme training. I went out for a few hours today and applied muscle ups and climb ups to every scenario I could find. I also experimented with different ways to do muscle ups and climb ups. Excuse the poor form on some of the movements, 100 muscle ups is a very taxing thing to do in time constraint of several hours!

I hope that my video will inspire you to try theme training and make a video of your own to share on APK.
