This article was recently on the front page of the News Journal in Wilmington, DE. Overall, I think Alison Kepner does a pretty good job of covering some aspects of Parkour. I think it's great that she got an expert opinion on the dangers of parkour, although that really just balances out that "Time Magazine reports that blah blah blah". I find it interesting that Alison didn't choose to ask the insurance agency herself, but rather quote Time Magazine's report. Being THE source for Parkour news in the US, we can't find ANY information to support the claims that have allegedly been made to this insurance agency. If someone breaks a fingernail we hear about it here- if someone smashed their face, we'd have known about it. Anyway, the guys in the article do a fairly good job of representing Parkour as well, but fall for some of the common pitfalls in doing an article - giving up quotes that can sound differently than they were intended, and mixing moves in an article that only references Parkour. This article goes from "8 foot backflips" to moving in the "fastest, most efficient way" in just one sentence! The pictures of course mostly feature flashier moves that are in fact not Parkour, but more commonly associated with Freerunning, or even Tricking, or just plain acrobatics.

Not altogether unbalanced. It's good to read an article that doesn't focus just on the flashier stuff, and also that doesn't fall into the, "OMG! The sky is falling! Kids these days are hurting themselves like THIS now!" trap.

The reference to the Time report as "evidence" of the possibility is just plain lazy journalism, IMO; but it's not necessarily bad.

I like her "What is Parkour?" bit at the end. Gives a good picture of what it is, I think, for a layperson. I often find myself struggling with how to explain parkour to people when they find out I (try to!) practice it.

I think the article did a good job of making parkour look more positive than most people who write about it really do. She was eager to talk and learn about it, where most news papers I think just wanna know when people get hurt from doing parkour or freerunning.
Although I wish she did not mention where people usualy run now cuz now I think the cops are staking out the areas us delaware people usualy practice. They were recently looking for kids doing "acrobatics" near the school.
Seeing as how parkour isn't about acrobatics though I told them I hadn't seen anyone ; )

I wasn't thrilled with the backflips from 8', running from the cops stuff. It seemed McGinnes and Kotler talk about safety and training, but do whatever they want. That was the impression I got from the article. I hope that's not the reality.

I'll be honest... I live in Delaware, and the News Journal is known for its crappy journalism.
