Be Strong to be Useful... PDF Print E-mail

Parkour for Military ApplicationsGeorges Hebert's motto for his methode naturelle , "Be Strong to Be Useful" has been a driving concept behind the inception of this site, along with our training at Primal Fitness in Washington DC. Parkour and Freerunning are fun, but from my viewpoint you have to give back and be able to handle any possible situation for it to retain its value. From the very beginning, we have been excited about the potential for training military, law-enforcement and rescue personell in the movements of Parkour, as I feel that the training could be of huge benefit to their work. The possibility of training them to perform their job more safely and effectively would be an awesome accomplishment.

This past week we had a chance to develop some adaptations of the movements under simulated combat conditions when a tactical defense trainer took the time to come by the gym and brainstorm some concepts with us from his end of the tactical training spectrum. You can check out some of the better images right on Primal Fitness

We're looking forward to some continued work in this area...keep an eye out for developments...

Look forward to seeing how this develops. One thing I've wondered personally is how wearing a backpack/supplies would change Parkour and what sort of adaptations would be required (i.e...how do you roll/land?)

Awesome, I hope I can do some work like this one day!

The easiest way to see how stuff affects your PK is to try it. If you have something in your hand, you're going to have a hard time using that hand for vaults, climbing. A pack raises your center of gravity and moves it behind you. Try a light pack with soft things, like clothes.

Keep us posted on how your relationship with law enforcement and the military develops. I'm very interested to see where this goes.

I am hoping this takes off and at least picks up with the US Spec War guys. A handful of guys who are in the Navy or are DEPPERS (like myself) are picking up on it. Guess it is already incorporated to some degree in Brittan so figure it can't hurt us here.

While I'm not military myself, I know that I have used parkour skills in games of paintball or airsoft, and they give you a huge advantage over other people. I hope this develops into something widely used.

I am military, deploied, and I have to say the problem with parkour use in a combat MOS is the weight of the equipment. From personal experience I know it would be very difficult, but I dont see how it could hurt.

I feel this discussion should be in the forum ...

lately i've been having more of a roaming approach to jamming. if you brought a bag to the jam, you carry it through the obstacles that we're passing. we've been trying to incorporate some simulations too, like climbing without any number of legs or arms, tripedal motion, passing obstacles with your arms full, all sorts of things.

Alright, Like redie2drive, im military too. At West Point they have DPE ( department of physical education) and they already have a lot of important things covered. It involves things like: getting up on a shelf, going over a wall, horizontal bars, rope climing, going through tires, and balancing on a beam. These are what professionals, Most with military experience( Officers of the rank of captain to colonel (full bird)) Trust me guys, the military has it covered.
