Julie Angel has been making some compelling Parkour videos as part of her PhD studies. Here's what she has to say about it: "My aim is to make very personal observational films which try and represent parkour in an accurate way that reflects the everyday approach to it as well as conveying an apprecciation for what it is and the skills required to do it." I've been researching, filming and documenting parkour for the past 2 years as part of an audio visual PhD. I've always been interested in how people use their environments in ways they were never intended for. Parkour represented alot of ideas that interested me in terms of creativity, self-expression, mobility, the built environment, and public spaces.
My aim is to make very personal observational films which try and represent parkour in an accurate way that reflects the everyday approach to it as well as conveying an apprecciation for what it is and the skills required to do it. I always work very collaboratively and with each film project I try to communicate new insights rather than repeat what has gone or been said before. The people in the films deserve huge credit as I just work as a visual translator for what they are all about, adding my own thoughts through the camera and editing style.
There is still so much to show and say about parkour that I feel as though I am just touching the surface of it, and hope to continue to make many more parkour related films. I hope people gain something from the films, whether it is enjoyment, inspiration, motivation or just a technical insight, or maybe the motivation to go and make their own films so they dont have to watch mine, it's all cool.
