10.30.08 - Mirror's Edge up the Wazoo! PDF Print E-mail
Tuesday, 04 November 2008

For the past week (and probably continuing on until it's launch on Nov. 11) I have been bombarded with stories on Mirror's Edge, a free-running based game being developed for consoles. Being an avid gamer myself, it looks like this is going to be a very fun game to play! Recently, a playable demo was unvieled, so check it out.

Fairfield School of Arts was reopened in style

Looks like this school was lucky enough to have a Parkour performance for it's grand opening! They didn't mention who did it, but it must've been cool :)

Parkour in Madison: The new urban workout

Excellent article featuring Madison Parkour! They interviewed Muse and Chad as they talk about about what Parkour is. The article highlight's how Muse found out about parkour and went about starting up the Madison scene, and how now it's exploded into a wonderful community! I enjoyed how they mentioned the Leave No Trace initiative, something I feel is often overlooked.

Documentaries take a look into odd lives

This article talks about a few documentaries that have been submitted for the Austin Film Festival - one of them deals with L'art du Displacement! They don't give out much information on the parkour documentary itself, but I managed to dig up a trailer for the film on youtube . Check it out and see what you think!

Outside the Lines - the Art of Movement

All press is not good as we can see by this article, the writer has some wrong ideas about parkour and freerunning. Some of her points are valid but it seems like her general understanding is still a bit off.

Warning for teens as extreme sport of parkour surfaces in Geelong

Wow. What a crazy piece of publication. They have clearly shown a lack in research and somehow managed to interview some students with a very bad viewpoint on parkour.

"It has been blamed for countless deaths of thrill seekers in the US who have fallen from multi-storey buildings while attempting to cross their cities in the most direct route possible."

There have been NO deaths in the US due to parkour, let alone "countless"  Only very recently have we had a report of a Parkour related death in the international community (and my best wishes go out to him and his family, whereever he may be :) ) so that may count as the first.

Overall, crappy journalism. If possible, write to the editor and let them know how you feel about this poor quality piece of work.

Freerunning founder flying through fear

This is a very good short article with Sebastien Foucan detailing his thoughts on freerunning in a condensed manner. He talks about parkour's beginnings as well as his future plans. They mention his media appearances (he talks about Madonna!!) and how it felt being in a Bond film.

No Obstacle Too Great

Check out this awesome article where our very own Ozzi is interviewed and takes the journalist around with HIPK describing what parkour is, its history, and the important fundamentals. Great article with even GREATER pictures. Man I'd love to visit Hawaii :)

The Rooftop Skills of a College Student

Oh man, just as we're discussing this on the forums an article comes flying out of nowhere where Freerunning is only mentioned once - interchanged as Parkour. This article is a basic "what is parkour" with an interview of a teenager thrown in. We see him describing parkour as complete control of your body, as getting from point a to point b, as a self discipline.... HMMMM lots of different terms were thrown around. We'll see where this leads us in the future.
