Yes, this is going to be one mother of a jam! The DC / Rosslyn/ Georgetown/ Bethesda area is full of hotspots which for the most part have been hassle free. Big ups to Skipper for pulling this whole thing together and even hosting a BBQ at his parent's house this Saturday. If you haven't made your sleeping arrangements, get on it now!! Kiernon Roche of Triple Threat Television brought a small handycam to the District B13 weekend. He was able to get some footage of the event itself as well as the next day's activities in the Sunshine theater. Kiernon filmed and edited this himself, not meant to be a masterpiece, this is one man's views of the event. While David & Cyril were in NY, they autographed some District B13 posters for American Parkour. I wanted to use the opportunity to help motivate people to go out and train, so I asked David for an idea for a contest. What David asked is to see is a picture or video clip of someone doing parkour in their home. I think the idea here is that Parkour can be a part of everyday life, so if there is some little shortcut (or even a more difficult way) to take in or right around your own home, this is a good way to keep you always thinking of a way to challenge yourself. The best news about this contest is that David himself will be picking the winner from all the entries. Entries may be a picture or up to 20 second video clip (please keep them small). Fine print and posting instructions will be added tomorrow night, entries will be accepted from June 1st through the 14th, open only to American traceurs (north, south, central all included). Tuesday May 30th there will be a special preview screening of District B13. American Parkour has a lot of seats to give away, numbers are still limited so be sure to sign up in this thread to secure your spot. There will be tons of media present, this is a great chance to show them how strong the US and especially Mid-Atlantic Parkour scene is. There is also a possibility that the Tribe will be doing a live demo for the media before the screening.
"Limited Spaces" ... HA! We had about 60 people in a massive 300 seat theater! The movie was great (again) thanks to everyone for coming out. Thanks to Dan of Terry Hines for the hookup with the seats.
The Tribe's SkyNative is on the Madonna tour with Sebastien Foucan. The 54 show tour kicks off tonight in Los Angeles. Many local traceurs are familiar with Skynative, his infectious enthusiasm and incredible skills. We're all very proud of him as he embarks on this tour, surely hard work and hopefully a lot of fun. Skynative is also a HUGE contributor to APK, he has built many of the cool features of the site, including APK's live chats (which will be coming back to Sunday nights pretty soon) and the APK Map. The day will go from the basics of jumping, landing, and rolling, into vaulting, and precision jump techniques. For anyone wanting to get into Parkour, this is a great opportunity! Cost for a 3 hour session is super cheap at $20 (some open gym sessions cost more than this!).
Everyone did a great job today. We were very happy to see so many people turn out and the most important thing is that everyone learned something and had fun. Thanks again to everyone who came. Last Tuesday a few East Coast traceurs got to meet with David & Cyril in a fairly intimate setting at the Sunshine Theater in SOHO New York. There was much less crowding, and more good conversation. I got to interview David, an opportunity I'm very grateful for. Exo and I both got some pointers on our rolls and landings, and Gear had a great conversation with David. I think if we could ask everyone to rate their own personally experience, Akh and Disciple would come out on top, as they got a 1 on 1 fight choreography lesson from Cyril which spanned at least 1/2 an hour and covered many of the basics, but also some of Cyril's "secret recipes" for good fight choreography. I might have been eavesdropping :) A lot less pictures, as the day was more about meeting and talking to them, but of course Owais got a pic with David (well, we wall did again) but this one's the best as David finally fell asleep from taking 50+ pictures with Owais!
As cool as gaining exposure can be, it becomes tiring explaining the same basic idea repeatedly to media and other outlets that don't seem to get the point. When I found the Crossfit community, I was excited about my conversations with people who truly understood the concepts of function and effective movement.
With that being said, I have listened to every single episode of Crossfit Live and have always kept the idea in the back of my head of the day when they would feature Parkour on their show. Well, the day is here. This sunday, May 21st I will be appearing as the featured guest on the Crossfit Live webcast at 10pm eastern time.
