if your new to backflips, some sort of object definitely cuz it gives you more time to spot your landing.
but if you can do a backflip on a trampoline for example without the jumping, then by all means your good to go.

You should learn the backflip of the ground first. Just so you gain more control of your rotation.

but be ready to get banged up.
again though, just stand on your trampoline and do a backflip without jumping beforehand. if you land it. go for the ground. if you need those jumps. keep practicing

Important considerations........Don't try backflips off of anything because although it may be easier, you will need the experience first to make it easier! Alot of things can go wrong (hit your head on the object your flipping off of, think twice mid air and land on your head/ back). I say go to the basics and learn back handspring first, dont try to skip steps in proper progression. Safety should be the main concern; learning the back handspring will allow you to know/get use to the feeling of flippin backwards, and build upon your foundation of flipping! Just my 2 cents

Maybe it's just a matter of opinion, but what's easier to do off the ground, backflip or frontflip?

Backflips are easier physically, frontflips are easier mentally. Get it?

stand on the railing of the trampoline where the blue cover goes around the spring, that way u get no bounce at all

get it perfect without more than the first bounce on a trampoline. Then find a nice padded place. I ended up practicing at playgrounds where I could land into piles of bark from a height. Once you get used to it, just do it from lower and lower until you can do it off the ground. Worked for me, and it was definitely easier doing off of something. It was scarier doing it off the ground for me than it was off of anything else.

I would have to say do it onto a mat in a gym or on the beach on the harder sand first, if you freeze in mid air (like I did many times) you will crash hard if you're going from on top of something.
As a side note, I have a pretty good standing back tuck but cannot do a back handspring without turning, so I don't know if that's the best way to learn at least for me.
