For both sand and grass, look beneath the surface.

Because they're both soft, they can hide hard things underneath. Make sure that grass isn't hiding tree roots, or nuts, or something else that could mess you up.

Here in Hawaii, it's pretty common to have a thin layer of sand over a thick layer of jagged rocks or coral. One storm can rip a foot off the beach, and totally change your landing area.
