ok so I just started working out with a few of my friends and they asked me to show you guys their routine to see if it is ok for them. OK one is 6'0" 155lbs and the other is 6'0" 175lbs. Each want to loose the weight on their stomach and gain muscle mass. They work out 3 times a week, tuesday, thursday, and saturday. They split the body parts every other day ie; Tues-upperbody,abs thurs-lowerbody, back, abs Saturday-upperbody, abs, etc. They stretch before and after every workout. The running is a little low but when they can do more they will. The weight used varies right now, and they want to know what weight they should be using.
Tuesday- Running-1 mile timed (must match or beat previous time)Benchpress-3 sets of 10, curls-3 sets of 15, pull ups-3 sets of 10, dips-3 sets of 8 to 10, leg raises- 3 sets of 20, v sits-3 sets for 20 to 30 seconds, planks-3 sets of 20 to 30 seconds, butterflys-3 sets of 10. Thursday- Suicides-a shit load, squats-3 sets of 10 to 15, calf raises-3 sets of 10, leg press-3 sets of 10, pull down-3 sets of 10, dumbell raises(for back)-3 sets of 10, leg raises- 3 sets of 20, v sits-3 sets for 20 to 30 seconds, planks-3 sets of 20 to 30 seconds. What do you think?

Get some performance goals and we'll talk.
I don't like that routine really at all. Mostly endurance which will not help drop weight and gain muscle mass (heavy lifting + metabolic work + DIET will do this...).

ok I'll talk to them and find out their goals, but doesnt this qualify for heavy lifting if they were going to lift 60% of their max? Cause that seems like a lot of weights to be lifting. Also what do you mean by metabolic work? Do you mean more cardio?

No. Heavy lifting is more like 80-100% of max. I would suggest learning proper form first obviously. Metabolic work = something like HIIT, some type of workouts done for time, tabata intervals, etc.

ok, he gave me some goals even though I told him they need to be specific.
he wants to get his body toned, and he also wants to fit for parkour. He wanted me to ask you what workouts would help with these goals(however unspecific they are) like what type of workouts he should be doing, along with what weights he should be using, and how often. I can show him the HIIT because I am using it now, so I'll get him to do it too.
Sorry steve my friend is a pain in the ass. I know.

ok, he gave me some goals even though I told him they need to be specific.
he wants to get his body toned,
Lift heavy, eat well, do a couple metcons
and he also wants to fit for parkour.
Conditioning (I'd say APK or CF WOD) and practice Parkour
He wanted me to ask you what workouts would help with these goals(however unspecific they are) like what type of workouts he should be doing, along with what weights he should be using, and how often. I can show him the HIIT because I am using it now, so I'll get him to do it too.
I can't know that information as I have basically zero information on his abilities and experience with working out.
If he wants to be extremely vague about things he can help himself. Frankly, I'm tired of asking people to get a few *quantify-able* goals and then ending up with responses about getting toned. No, that's not a *quantify-able* goal, sorry. Without good goals, exercising is fairly pointless as there is no progression
Sorry steve my friend is a pain in the ass. I know.
