I almost always check the WOD on the frontpage late at night to see whose doing it.

there are a few peopl who are ALWAYS in there ... bubblemaker, gear, frosti, demon, Akh, then people who are there most of the time, asa, cloud, ando, emmie, skipper, skynative, then peole who are there sometimes, exxon, leon, me and a few others.

This leads me to a couple of questions...

1. Do you do the workout of the day. If so, do you post, why or why not?

2. If you don't, why not?:
a) didn't know about it
b) not interested
c) don't feel it's a good overall fitness routine
d) I'm lazy
e) I don't feel that it relates to parkour
f) I don't care to progress in parkour thorugh increasing overall fitness

I estimate that we have at least a couple of hundred active members, and on average about 10-11 people post in the WOD.

One of APK's main goals is to get people out doing PK, being more active and more fit, this is why I'm curious as to how we can do this better.

Thanks!

I check the WOD and usually think its great stuff I tend not to do it because I am either training crossfit or doing specific gymnastics training of my own design or my coaches. At moment my fitness level is not high enough to do everthing else I do and the APK WOD.

I do them with Akh when time permits.  I do not post results because I see not reason for me to do so, as I know what I am or am not doing and generally how far I am or am not progressing.  In my opinion, there is no fault in the Community for lack of participation in commentary on this particular forum.  The only way I see you getting a drastic increase in participation is through competition in the workout of the day, however I assume that that avenue would lead to debates on being able to trust people and such, not to mention the fact that it would have people doing the workouts not for personal development so much as for domination over others in the community, something I personally do not advocate.

I try to do them as often as I can, but some days I'm either up late to rediculous hours of the night doing homework, or I'm simply wiped out. On those days I still try to do my own brief workout, but nothing worth posting. Otherwise I'm pretty happy with how they are. It's a little tough to run due to snow and freezing air around here, and I don't have a pullup bar, but those are my problems not WODs problems.

The only way I see it as a competition is with yourself, that's why when available there is a link back to the last time that exercise or routine was done, is you you can gauge your (hopefully) progress Smiley

I occasionally check out the WOD section, but I seem to have formulated my own little workout that I do right before I go to bed every night.  First I attempt to touch my toes, and when I finally get down to them I try hoslind it for 4 sets of 5 seconds.  I mainly do this because I'm a sprinter and I have terrible flexibility, I'm hoping that pushing myself every night will make me a bit faster.  Then after that I do as many handstand pushups as I can possibly do against my wall (full extentions) this is usually around 9.  Then I stretch my calves a bit and start doing some leg lifts.  I start with doing 30 leglifts while laying on my back, then I try go for 20 on each side.  I know that it's not much, but It seems to be helping me with running and parkour Smiley

Manilla, have you seen the exercise substitutions?

The exercises are meant to be a challenge for people in very good shape, which means that many of them will be simply too much for someone in fair to good shape, and nigh on impossible for someone in bad shape.

Hopefully though that doesn't discourage people form doing them, as there are substitutions for each exercise, if you can't do a single push up, you can hold yourself at arm's length up from the floor. If that's too much, you can do it from your knees, if that's too much, do it lying down completely and just put pressure on your hands ... almost all exercises are nearly infinitely scalable like this, and we encourage people to try them at whatever level they can.

I personally usually can't do the whole workout as it prescribed, and sometimes just the APK warmup wears me out!!

Things change form day to day and person to person, so part of the message here is ADAPT. Either adapt the exercises, the times, or yourself, and slowly but surely things will build.

For some people they will have to do negative pullups for months before they can do just one pullup, and when they do, it is  a HUGE accomplishment!!

Haha yeah, the warmup is a workout in itself, but it's well worth it!
The workouts are definitely scaleable, only you know what your body needs on a day to day basis, and you should listen accordingly! Which isn't to say you shouldn't push yourself, but you don't have to push so hard in the beginning :p

I do the workouts to show my dedication to myself, the competition is with myself. I can't tell you the number of times in the past that I've told myself "OK! I'm gonna start working out regularly," and didn't keep up with it. My passion for parkour is what drives me here now, I have a reason for the workouts, they provide me with a reward in the form of going out one day and realizing "did my precision jumps just increase 4 inches" or "my cat climbs are so much faster now!" And in the form of just being physically fit, it's a darn good feeling [and my girlfriend likes it too :p].

It's a great oppurtunity to help yourself. The fact that they are there, on the front page, provided for us is awesome. The fact that it's switched up every day helps it from not getting old or feeling like a boring routine, and the fact that we have this great community here to push eachother further is just awesome.

I know a lot of people are busy, or think they don't have time. Hell, I'm busy and don't have a lot of 'free' time. I'm a second semester senior in college taking 5 classes, a Senior Art Show preparation class, an internship, working as a Tech Tutor on campus, and I'm a full-time boyfriend :p The time admittedly is scarce, but I make the time. It seems like it at first, but 30 minutes [on average I guess?] is not a lot of time to take out of my day! And as I've said before, it's totally worth it, the rewards are immense.

Back to the scaleability though, it is really easy to just scale these workouts down to your level. By either changing the actual excercises, or just cutting the numbers / reps down. Here's a link to the excercise substitutions article, with a little snippet :

Quote
If the exercise in question is within your ability, but not at the posted rep-range, going at the workout at 100% and falling slightly short of the posted reps is completely acceptable. One of the most useful skills in the realm of functional fitness is knowing your limit, and the only way to learn this is by working right up to it and attempting to nudge it a bit farther each day. By putting everything you’ve got into each workout, you will begin to see that limit stretch more and more, and before you know it, you’ll be doing the workouts as posted!

P.S. M2 - I'm surprised you're up late enough to see my posts on the WoD :p Not to say you're not a big boy who can decide his own bedtime... =D

I would also like to add that any questions or comments can be posted to the WOD forum or emailed to me. If you're not sure how to perform an exercise, or perhaps how to properly substitute for your skill-level or perhaps because of an injury, I am always glad to help out. I'm just glad to see as many people doing it as already are!

I would say that the main benefit of posting is both the motivation gained from being a part of a group activity and the ability to log your progress and have it archived to refer back to. It's nice to do the same workout after a couple of months and really realize the amount of progress you've made!

I like keeping in shape but i know it's hard to find the motivation a lot of the time and these workouts give me some structure and regulation, i know it's especially important to keep up with it in the winter. I used to just go when i felt like it and do whatever i felt like, my strengths were unbalanced and i didn't go enough to improve only stay where i was. I really have seen great improvements since i started doign these, i can do things that aren't just from practice but i was unable to do because i wasn't strong enough or have enough balance or flexibility. Since parkour is such a big part of my life it only makes sense that i should work to improve what i am capable of, in my mind it's the only way to safely improve my abilities. On a side not i find it funny that M2 mentioned that he always sees my name there and i havne't done it yet tonight.  Embarrassed I'm off to do it right now. It's all about deciding how much you want to dedicate to parkour, how much do you want to put into it that decides waht you'll get out of it.
