This is my first real post here, I've been lurking for a little while. Been into parkour for about 3 or 4 months now, and its been pretty life changing. But lately i have a problem.

Im destroying my hands. Id post a picture of the ugly things, but im sure you've all dealt with it. They're dry, and they've been worn down, especially my thumbs. Yesterday i was screwing the valve caps on a car tire, and my thumb just ripped open. And now ive gotten to the point where i cant go out and run until my hands heal up.
So my question is:
how do you take care of your hands, to prevent them from being torn up, and how to take care of them once they are torn and bloody? (especially my thumbs)

That happens to me too but it is not as bad. I have been doing pk for around a year now and i have calluses (dont know how to spell that lol) all over them. When one of them falls off then it kind of hurts, but other than that i like my hands more because they are much tougher. All i can say is make sure your hands aren't dry or get dry when you are pk-ing, and if that don't work, then wear gloves.

Put on good hand lotion at night and sleep in cotton gloves, this helps a lot from keeping them from splitting, etc. Also, the New skin liquid bandage works wonders for healing up splits and cuts while staying active:

yup, i cant stand my hands when they are dry. Right when i get home from jams i load them up with lotion. whenever they feel dry i do that, i dont let them ever get to the point of cracking, i think its just high hopes that someday the president will shake my hand and be impressed with the silky smoothness.  Wink then he'll give me money.

ya, I have joked about that with my friends. We were saying stuff like "We have so many callesus that if we were to hold hands with a chick, we would probably make their hands bleed."

i have giant calluses. they never really split open though. usually i scratch them down some after i shower. this prevents them from getting too big. if you just leave them alone they can get entirely ripped off and REALLY hurt and be a pain in the ass.

Ya, that has happened to me before. Actually i have a little circle of soft smooth skin where one of them ripped off a while ago.

Strangely enough, I don't seem to have very much trouble with my hands.  Sure they're a little callusy, but not nearly as much as most peoples (at least it sounds like it).  The other strange thing is that my hands don't hurt very much after grabbing rails (or water ever else I grab) for a few hours.  They kinda hurt after a whole day of parkour, but for the most part I don't notice them.  I also haven't gotten any blisters on my hands in about 6 months, kinda strange huh?  Well I better go do some handstand pushups while reading my book Wink

a large part of my problem is, that i spend most of my time working on this brick wall, with really rough bricks. (i live in a semi-rural area) so its all ive got. but i think ill try to use some lotion. i tried going out tonight w/ gloves, but when i got inside, my thumb had cracked more, and all the blood and junk mixed with the softness in the glove, and i had a furry thumb. thanks for the suggestion though. Im glad i dont just have skin that refuses to stay where i tell it. haha.

peace,
Bry

This has gone on too long for me to say nothing: The word is "callous."

The best way to get tough hands is to use your hands.

And I use baby oil. I don't know if I should, but it feels good and smells great.

Alright guys...dont make fun of me but the best thing that you can REALLY use after getting nice RIPS like that is Preperation H.  I know this sounds stupid but it is kind of a Gymnast trick.  It helps heal the sore and heals it up tougher.  Just TRUST me 100% on this one.  Although the Lotion is not a bad idea before you go to bed WHEN your rips are all nice and healed...if your still getting cracked hands.

Thats one of those things that, even if it does work amazingly is still really wierd!, the guy that figred it out must be either a total freak ( for being the first guy to put Prep H on his hands) or a total... yo know what hes a freak. but its still helpful

All I have to say is wait for the Callas to come and it'll be fine from there. You will still have to worry about occasional cuts and dirt but there like skin gloves.

BTW: that guy is crazy Roll Eyes

Hands arent my big problem, I wear weight lifting gloves so I dont tear my wrists (used to happen alot).

But you cant really wear full gloves, just makes everything harder in my experience.

On a interesting side note, really f-ed up my knee, I injured it bad a few years back in soccer, and needed some surgery, and then yesterday I tried to speed vault a fence at a pretty good clip, the top was about 4 and half feet high or so, needless to say I barely cleared it, but I clipped the top with my knee as I spun over, got a pretty solid catilidge bruise.

Im probably out for a few weeks assuming it heals right.

A word of advice, dont ever hurt your knees, its been about 2 years since my soccer injury and the knee is still weak.
Knees just never grow back right, one injury can last a life-time.
