Btay, I agree adding some parkour and other stuff is a lot more enjoyable than plain old running. Sometimes I wish had the time to workout enough to do in great shape in every aspect of fitness, and technically I could make the time, but it is just not worth the sacrifices I would have to make in other areas. I feel a little bit sad I am not in great running shape, but I know I would feel even sadder if I spent less time with my wife and kids and doing other stuff I enjoy or that is useful. Workout: During the day did 3 sets of 4 pullups. Did WOD http://www.americanparkour.com/content/view/2023/322/ while getting my kids to bed. Trying to do a frog stand is harder when a 40 lbs little boy is jumping on you back. 2:00 total of l-sit 2:00 total of frogstand and holding push up position with feet on chair and my little boy on my shoulders 2:00 total of handstand position with feet on wall

Helped with an estate sale at my wife's grandma's farm. Did some lifting and some fun parkour in the trees at the farm. Also did some good climb ups and drops on the slightly elevated back porch of the house (the porch railing was about 7 feet high).

Your conditioning doesn't have to take time away from your family. Let it bring you closer. You already did bouldering with your son. I've noticed that when kids play, they go in arcs and circles. [When they run]. You can take advantage of this a couple ways:
QM. Places where you make a big arc, while he makes a small arc. Low reps of exercises, scaled so he can do it. Low ground level precisions and balance. Big obstacles he can go around or under, while you have to go over or through it. Games where you're not allowed to touch the ground. Hopping games. Chase games. When it gets warmer, chase games where he gets a water pistol. QM with him holding on. Use him as a squirmy weight, and try to balance on one foot, compensating for his movements. Lift, carry and/or throw things. Games where you cooperate. Games where you 'compete'. Figure out how you can handicap yourself - either restrictions or added things you have to do that he doesn't.
The possibilities are endless. It's a win for both you and your son. Let me know how it works out.

Your conditioning doesn't have to take time away from your family. You are absolutely right, and I do a lot of my working out with my kids. That is one of the reasons I am attracted to parkour, because my son loves it. My little 20 month old girl it starting to take it up too. Saturday I was doing parkour with my son and some of his friends in our basement. My little girl was running around and then I turned around to see what see was doing and saw this: I was so proud. I guess my thought were more it is hard to find the time to do the pure running training that I would need to try to get back down to 16 or 17 minute 5ks. But I am okay with that. I can get in pretty good shape just doing the kind of things you suggest and I can have a great time with my kids. And who knows maybe I will get in good enough shape just playing to do a good 5k. Right now I am in poor aerobic shape, but in a week or two when the weather is just a little better I will start riding my bike to work again. It is 27 miles one way (I ride only one way and then take the bus home) and so I get in pretty good aerobic shape by riding it every day. Maybe that combined with doing the WOD and doing parkour with my kids will combine to make it so I do a pretty solid 5k. Do you have any kids btay? Todays Workout: Went to friends house and climbed trees with my kids and friends kids. My little boy rocks. I was really impressed by how well he climbed and how well he is learning to listen and understand me when I give him pointers. After we got home I did the WOD http://www.americanparkour.com/content/view/2034/322/Warmup: 3 rounds of 5 sqats, 5 pushups, 4 pullups Workout: 7 rounds of the following in 17:26: 100m Sprint 3 Dips 15 Squats My last few sets of dips were pretty shallow and weak. I will have to work on those.

Very cute photos. Congrats! I don't have kids, yet, just nephews and nieces. Sounds like you're having lots of fun with your kids.
Training down to 16/ 17 min 5k. I don't know how far out you are from that kind of shape. I know it would take me a lot of work. Keep us posted on your progress.

Training down to 16/ 17 min 5k. I don't know how far out you are from that kind of shape. I am about 10 minutes or about 10 years out from that kind of shape, depending on how you look at it. I have run off and on for the last 10 years but it has been over 10 years since I have been in good enough shape to run that fast. Today I did the WOD http://www.americanparkour.com/content/view/2036/322/ in my backyard. Warmup: 3 rounds of 5 squats, 5 pushups, 4 pullups Workout: 4 rounds, 1:00 rest between rounds (had an extra long rest after the third one because my daughter wanted me to push her on her swing). Burpee + Broad Jump a total of 25 yards. This took 7 burpee+broad jump combos 7 push-ups 7 Leg Lifts Times (3:00, 3:01, 2:45, 2:30) My arms were sore from dips yesterday, so my push ups were really slow. Also my leg lifts were really slow. My times got faster because I learned a rythim for doing the burpee+broad jump.

Did the WOD http://www.americanparkour.com/content/view/2041/322/Ran, walked, sprinted for a total of about 30 minutes. Found a few obstacles to try. Unfortunately I was in a residental area so most the obstacles were in people yards and couldn't use them, so mostly I did running on curbs for balance practice. After I got home I practiced monkey vaults in my basement.

I was too tired today to do the WOD. My little girl has been getting up a lot at night, and the lack of sleep is catching up to me. I did practice monkeys for a while, while the kids played Wii. I filmed myself and noticed I still pull my feet to the side sometimes. I can consitantly do monkeys, but it still not second nature to me. I wanted a little bit of a work out so I decided to see if I could do 10 pullups in a row yet. I did. YEAH! Just 5 more to reach my goal for the year.

Ran and messed around for a total of about two miles. First mile was from my work to the bus stop. Second mile was from bus stop to my house. My wife and I baby sat our friends sons and I introduced them to parkour. Then we played the floor is lava, no real significant moves for me, but the kids did some nice gaps and climb ups.

I'd like to second that, Tacoman!
I didn't realize you had kids until reading your journal. I have a 1 yr old son who is too early to do PK, of course, but you are a true inspiration!
When my wife pokes fun at me again, I'll point her to your log.
Kudos!

Thanks Laurie and CptBongue, I hope one day you have as much funny playing with your kids as I do with mine. I did most the WOD http://www.americanparkour.com/content/view/2066/322/ today. Workout: 3 circuits of the following, 1:30 rest between circuits: Elevated Push-Up with feet on 38 inch barrier x 5 immediately followed by Clap Push-Ups x 5 Pistol or weighted Pistol only down to knee level x 5 (each leg) immediately followed by Stair jump ups(2-3 stairs at a time) x 10 L-Pull-Up x 5 My knees have feeling kind of funny so I went easy on the leg exercises and it was late at night so I skipped the planks in the WOD. The L pullups were a nice challenge, because I usually do at least a little kipping in my pullups.

No workout today. My left knee is really bothering me. It doesn't hurt, but the muscles and tendon are all tight and the patella is not quite tracking right. I did a deep massage of my hams, quads and calves and then it felt a lot better. I really need to be more diligent in my cools downs to stretch and improve my flexibility. I have always had overly tight hamstrings and quads. My tendon on the back of my knee feels swollen, so I think I will do some icing.
