I hear a lot about how people progress slowly and they steadily get better and better and faster and faster over a long period of time. Now I'm just wondering how many people are like this because I realized something about myself when I trained yesterday. I dont progress like that. My progression is I get better at a technique and then no matter how many times I practice the technique, I dont see a progression of even the slightest measure.

So like I said I realized this yesterday...so the time I trained before yesterday I could only pop vault something about 5 feet high and had been able to do that for awhile but not getting any better also, I couldnt do much higher cleanly but yesterday I tried one and was able to do a pop vault over head height so the wall was about 6-6.5 feet...thats a pretty big difference in just one day.

Second thing...my kongs improved dramatically where it felt amazingly smooth...I dont know if anyone knows what I'm talking about...but you know it when you feel it.

And the third thing...that had just completely amazed myself cuz i think it was more amazing than the pop vault or my kongs...it was my cat walk had dramatically gotten better...before I could cat walk well and keep my balance and even cat walk on wobbley rails and they were pretty fast...but yesterday when I practiced them...the first time I got up on the rail...I was just compelled to do quickly...why? I dont know...but I did it. I ended up cat walking a 15 foot rail in about 2 seconds...faster than the people were walking by which is a pretty good speed.

Now...just wondering who progress slowly or who progresses like I do...because I find it very odd and dont really have an explanation for it.

I haven't been in Parkour enough to give advice pertaining to THIS specific activity. However, in judo, I feel the same thing. For example: Ippon seioei nage. Basiually, You pick someone up on your back by their arm and toss them.

FOr a while, I sucked. I practiced but never got any better. Then one day at practice, I was 'sparring' with my friend, and all of a sudden, I slipped in a Ippon and threw him perfectly. It's just a kind of feeling like "I'm gonna kick some @$$."

I guess, what I think it is, is that your body takes a while to literally have the movement perfectly implanted in the nerves. It becomes natural, and THAT's when the progression is seen.

Yea I took judo and my dad has been doing it for almost 50 years so he has taught me a lot but one day when me and him were sparring I managed to get around his guard and throw him...I don't know what throw it was but it was natural...so natural that after I threw him I was like: "How did I just do that?"

Yeah i know exactly what you mean thats how i am.....i think it happens like that because when your continually trying to do something your muscles are getting tired so you see no progression but at the same time they are getting the movement memorized so the next day when they are fully recharged you can do it better because they have the movment down......i could be wronge so if anyone knows better please correct me Grin

I know what you mean by that...but in my situation I go MONTHS without improvement and then suddenly improve one random day...its not that my muscles are tired...i only train twice a week which i wish i could do it more but can't cuz of school now.

Actually, progression is more of a gain-plateau-gain-plateau-gain-plateau kind of thing, moreso than a linear or exponential growth. So you were just sitting on a plateau, and now you're noticing a lot of growth as you move away from it!

Hmm I guess but still I think its weird that I get a lot better one random day...maybe it is training or maybe I was in the zone...yea i think that might be it...cuz my dad was telling me about this thing called biorythms...its hard to explain but if you want to know about it: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Biorhythm

Yeah, as far as I can tell most people progress in this fashion. Thats part of why I believe for the first year or so, drilling moves beyond what it takes to preform them is unessasary. I believe people should just play and try out new things for the first year or two, then begin truely perfecting their movement.

Dude, you took judo? SICK But, why'd you stooop? And, 'get around his guard'? Guard's on the ground, haha. I get what you're saying though. My judo movements are actually second nature now, haha. If you came up behind me and accidentally kicked me, I'd try and sweep your foot without knowing haha.

i've noticed something like that in reverse. one day i'll be getting better with each vault and then the next i'll  regress and be falling on my face all day.

when that happens, I go and eat, and go right out to train again after the food has settled, it works too!
For me it's just energy and concentration are low when I'm hungry.. lol

I have one question. Why do we progress like this? Doesn't it seem that once we know how to do something, and once our body can physically do what we are planning to, shouldn't we be able to do it. The problem is we can't, eventually we hit a point where our technique is nearly perfect and all we do is improve our physical abilities (such as the olympic runners who win by miliseconds) why can't anybody who runs do that. All people know how to run, so shouldn't we run at our maximum physical potential like the olympic runners?
