Recently I've noticed that i can run fast, but I have horrible endurance. My current mile time is around 7:14 and I'm hoping to get it down to at least 6min by Spring. I want to know what I can do every day to gain endurance. Next year I'm hoping to join the cross country team (I was asked to join, but I didn't feel that I have enough endurance). Usually when I run a mile my lungs feel like they're going to collapse, but I keep running through the pain. My temples also start to ache, but I'm guessing that's from lack of oxygen or something. Help would be much appreciated.

My limiting factor at mile is that the legs get filled with lactic acid at some point but my breathing is good.

Tempo run 5-6 miles at about 8:30/mile should kick your endurance up. Don't forget lengthy speed repeats (800m-1000m).

Whiteninja's training journal is also a good one to check out. Once you build up the endurance to go really fast in one mile you can just take a "leisurely" pace for a couple.. although running XC sometimes is beneficial too. You don't want to log too many unnecessary miles though as it can be bad on the joints if your running technique is poor.
