I've been thinking, is it ok to add "style" to pk? I know that this subject has been touched upon before, but this is a little different. Now it's fairly obvious that you wont be running for your life everyday (at least I hope not), so then is it alright to stray a little from "purist" parkour? What I mean by straying is adding a little flair to the way that you personally do things, in another words making it your specific "style". I'm definitely not saying that by straying you will be adding flips, spins, handsprings, and such to a run, that kind of stuff falls more into a tricking category. I guess what I'm trying to say by "straying" is: moving away a little from total efficiency parkour and adding a bit more fun to it. I'm not sure I'm really getting my thoughts across here, so I'm sorry if this offends anyone, I'm merely trying to state a question to the people that have a more "refined" view of parkour, like the people that have been doing this for a few years now. I realize that the whole point of parkour is to move as quickly and efficiently as possible through your surrounding environment in order to avoid assailants, traffic, or just get places quicker. But at jams (for the most part) you aren't doing any of these things, so why not add some style to the way you personally do things. I know that everyone naturally has their own "style", and I guess what I'm trying to say is "is it alright to expand upon the style that you already posses to the point that it is truly and distinctly yours". I'm really sorry that I wasn't able to get my thoughts through more clearly, I seem to have a lot of trouble with that. If I think of a way to express what I'm trying to say better then I wil, but for now this is all I got.

theres plenty of style in it. theres different techniques.
one footed vs two footed takeoffs one step vs multiple wallruns the form in any vault.
my friend looks like a total beast doing parkour. in his kongs he looks like a cheetah, his legs go on the outside of his arms, and i dont think its hindering him, because he can kong farther than anyone else i know.
whether to dash or speed or monkey, whether to drop and roll, or turn and drop, whether to qm or roll underneath something, whether to go over or through. thats the style.

hi cheetah, good that your asking this question....first off, as for pure parkour, there is no such thing...its just parkour now with style if you mean like flair moves, i.e rocket vault.... But at jams (for the most part) you aren't doing any of these things, so why not add some style to the way you personally do things. what your techinally doing at jams/meet is just training for parkour. if your at a training meet/jam or by yourself and your training with the mindset of parkour, then all of sudden you add some flair moves, then no, thats not alright...you are no longer doing "parkour" or training for it....if you want to be training with the mindset of parkour you have to think in the back of your mind, if i were in a situation that needed me to quickly and efficiently get away or reach somewhere, you wouldn't be adding flair to "run" as all your doing is trying to get away as quickly as possible using only effective movements that are suitable for you at the specifc moment ( but without thinking what movement to do at the object, should come naturally over time and practise, which we all strive to acheive and approve upon) then what you would be doing is drilling the basic movements so it can be quick and smooth as possible so when a situation arises you can escape and reach, no problem you can have fun and practise parkour, without the flair moves...but you want to add alittle flair to you training go ahead...just don't call it parkour anymore

Of course. If you see a stocky person and a skinny person practicing, you will see this instantly.
But if you're talking about a different kind of style: Who thinks about having a "unique style" while rescuing your mother from a burning building?

It's fine to do whatever you want, as long as you know that it isn't Parkour. It's really simple like that. Just because you occasionally choose to do something that couldn't be deemed Parkour (such as adding "style" to Parkour-like movements) doesn't mean you are automatically kicked out of the club. I will occasionally throw in goofy combinations that have absolutely no effecient purpose when I'm training with friends, but the simple, effecient and useful movement of Parkour by itself is much more appealing to me, and I define my style by the paths I then choose to take. Your "style" within a Parkour context could also be defined by how you adjust to similar objects to accomodate your own body-type and movement patterns. I won't be able to do an underbar the same as Andi's skinny ass, so my "style" for the same move will automatically be different

Ok, I'm starting to see it now, I guess what I was talking about were all of the little "goofy" things that people add in every once and a while. I wasn't thinking about all of the time, just a little here and there (just for kicks ). But yes, I too enjoy doing just parkour a ton, it's just fun to add a couple goofy things in when you've been practicing for a few hours in the same spot, ya know what I mean. I definitely want to train for the worst, incase it ever does happen, now that I think about it, if I train with a lot of extra style it might hinder me when I really need to move quickly. Thanks for all of your input guys.

gear hit the nail on the head. it is fine at jams and whatnot to just have fun. you don't really need to have a name for it, you are simply using your abilities to move and have fun. however, when you should also try to train the most efficient techniques sometimes as well. so yea, have fun, do whatever you want, but also, train for parkour. and bullfrog is right, it is just parkour. it seems to me, that you have never experienced a parkour run before. when you do, you will know why we say that there is no pure and freestyle. it is parkour period, when it becomes "freestyle", the parkour is dropped. try picking a point with a fair amount of obstacles in the way next time you are training, and just try to get there as fast as you can. (you may have to make some boundaries to make it interesting, as it is doubtful that you are training on post battle urban ruins) don't think about what moves you are going to do, just look at where you are, look at where you want to go, and just move.

I've done a few good runs and the feeling from them is the reason I do parkour . I love doing just what you said don't think about what moves you are going to do, just look at where you are, look at where you want to go, and just move. I'm definitely not the best in the Springs and my runs may not be perfect yet, but the whole experience of parkour is gained through training and applying . This is kinda off topic but when I found parkour it fit my life like a glove, I feel like this is what I was born to do .

I think that everybody does those goofy things every now and then, nobody is really ALWAYS going most efficiently. Like when i am trying to get people interested or am showing a bunch of people i always do those goofy moves. I like you cheetah, you're a cool cat.  I agree skipper. I'm definitely not the best in the Springs and my runs may not be perfect yet, but the whole experience of parkour is gained through training and applying . You are definitely a fast learner and it wont be long until catch up to us. . You also have a really good attitude. ...applaud for you.

I dont know Cheetah those words you stated before changing your "mind" sounded awfully close to "freestyle parkour." Are you sure you are not a Closet FreeStyliest? The addition of "style" definitly does not belong in "parkour" so by adding that what do you get??? FREESTYLE PARKOUR. Run with your gut Cheetah come over to the Dark side of the Furpickers! We need more minions to fight for the justice and equality of the "Flow." Just remember what you said a while back...I know you took back some of your remarks then too but...come on stand up for yourself and your thoughts. Cheetah I do think that if you're good you could definitely incorporate a flip into a flow in parkour. Just imagine it, you do a few vaults then go straight into a flip. Just because you added a flip into you're flow does that void it as a flow? LOL that is one of the funnest post I have ever made lol.
