Well, my AD was in the Bahamas all week, so I had to teach class lastnight for him, and also the pointe class tonight. These are classes I normally take, but he needed me to sub, so no real work got done by my muscles. *sigh* That's the downside of being on faculty and being near retirement, performance-wise.
So the log for lastnight was:
Teaching: 90-minute advanced-level ballet class, 75 minute beginner level ballet class, 90-minute advanced level ballet class.
Tonight:
90-minute advanced level ballet class (with our ballet mistress, so it was a thorough butt-kicking). Emphasis on jumps. Teaching: 75-minute pointe class, and 90-minute advanced level ballet class (I did barre with them so I got some leg strengthening and precision work done; but only about 20 minutes' worth or so).

My Artistic Director is still in the Bahamas (lucky guy), so we had a guest teacher for company class: one of the dance department faculty at the university here. Her class totally kicked my butt. Afterwards, modern class (only my 4th modern class, ever! So fun to move in a new way!), with my beloved Horton Technique. Another butt-kicking. Awesome!
Today:
90-minute advanced level company class, emphasis on one-legged balances, centering, extensions, and turns.
90-minute modern class; emphasis on turns and flow; following the usual uber-strengthening Fortifications. The coccyx balances tonight were *killer*

Friday-Monday: I was a lazy bum. Today (Tuesday 5/29): 90-minute ballet class, including emphasis on endurance and quick level changes (e.g. exploding from a knee-to-the-ground lunge to a one-legged leap... my quads are killing me!) Taught a 75-minute beginner-level adult ballet class and a 90-minute advanced-level ballet class

Wed. 5/30:
90-minute advanced level ballet class. It was with our drill sergeant of a ballet mistress, and after yesterday's quad/glute killer, today's class was painful!
75-minute pointe class.
Taught 90-minute ballet class.
My Achilles tendons were being sketchy all night... kind of nervous about doing too much. Gonna see the PT tomorrow before class just in case.

Thurs. 5/31
90-minute company class. The last ten minutes, my AD gave us the same combination he gave us Tuesday night: the one with the one-legged jumps springing out of a kneeling position (yeah that one, the one that killed my quads). I marked most of it, because my quads were still pretty shredded, but tried to do it full-out on the left side since Tuesday we'd done more on the right and I wanted to even out.
My Achilles tendon started getting sketchy again, to the point where I thought I was going to hurt myself, so I started doing less and less towards the end of class. Like a moron I didn't go see the PT before class, because even though my Achilles was feeling sketchy after class yesterday, it was feeling fine today, so I didn't go to the PT. Mostly because I was afraid he'd tell me not to dance.
Well that was stupid, because tonight it started to really scare me, to the point where I didn't take the modern class I normally take after company. I am now doing hot/cold contrast with epsom salts in the hot, and ice on the cold. Tomorrow I'm seeing the PT first thing.
We only have one week left in our season, so it will be a good chance for me to rest and focus on cross-conditioning (and more on actual parkour!), but I'm frustrated because I was finally feeling like I was making some headway in my overall performance level, dance-wise, and now I have to go easy again. :-/
And yeah... I'm scared to really push anything on this tendon.

Just a quick question, do you have any traceurs in your area that you could train with? I never really got the grasp or the passion until I went to my first jam and started it with other people! If there are you should take advantage and go train with them instead of by yourself at a park (not that self training isn't important!)

At this point, no. I am dying to get a group together. I have some people interested but getting our schedules to match is a challenge. Plus, these people are all more beginner than me (which is way scary because all I do is roll!) so a lot of them are looking to me to be "in charge." I'm looking to find traceurs, though. It's a project of mine for the summer. Most of the people my age are too scared to try it. Chickens.

So I was off my feet for four days (Friday 6/1-Monday 6/4) to give my muscles a chance to heal up a bit. I danced for about an hour Friday and 3 hours Saturday, but those were teaching hours so I didn't do much aside from occasionally demonstrating, so I'm not even going to count that.
The latest:
Tuesday 6/5:
90-minute advanced level ballet class, emphasis on petit allegro (quick, precise, small jumps/intricate footwork), and fast turns (one-legged and two-legged)
Taught 75-minute beginning-level adult ballet class
Taught 90-minute advanced-level ballet class
I also tried one pullup on the ballet barre before class; it's high enough that I can be sitting on the floor and have my arms extended, so I can try pullups from a seated position (in the boys' class, the boys do pullups on the barre, holding their legs in an L-sit as they go up). Let's put it this way, I still have one pullup (with partial bodyweight only) as a goal. It didn't go so well: I hardly budged. :-/
Man this is making me so mad... which means I am going to go after that pullup like there's no tomorrow. It will happen. Oh yes, I will do a pullup. *shakes fist at the heavens*

If you have a railing and a wall near the railing, try pulling up on the wall while sliding your feet on the railing. Then you can progress to negatives, and pull-ups will soon follow

Workout for 6/6:
90-minute advanced level ballet class
75-minute pointe class
Taught 90-minute advanced level ballet class
Next week I will be able to really set down some actual parkour goals and benchmarks, to set up my summer program. *sigh* Just two more days of school for me! I'm so sick of grading exams... and then I have to move out of my classroom, and an interview at a new school next week!
Why are there only 24 hours in a day? :/

Company class was canceled tonight, and we have some apocalyptic weather, so training at the park is out. End of the school year is making me depressed and moody.
The APK warmup was all I had in me tonight.
*sigh*

Thank you very much, Saint 7! Had our final checkout day today so that was kind of bittersweet. Then a big party at another teacher's house! I've been "celebrating" since noon. And I have a horrible sunburn. You weren't kidding about the blue skies! Excellent news, though: I found a training partner! He was a friend of the teacher who was hosting the party, and he's a beginner too! We exchanged info and will probably start training late next week! *happy dances* Today's workout btw was moving a lot of boxes around my classroom, packing up, climbing around taking down posters, etc; and then lifting a beer cup to my lips x 1000 or so.

Congrats on the training partner!!! Does he have an account on apk? If not, you should get him one. The advice and guidance provided here can be infinately useful! Let us know how training goes! Have a nice day.

Thanks, Jag. I don't know if he's been here or not. I haven't had a chance to contact him and get him set up but I've mentioned APK and hope to get him (and anyone else I train with) going here. With regard to the whole training partner "thing," I have set as one of my summer goals to get a training group together and also to get some sort of web presence going in my community to start up a group. I registered my domain name last night and have started putting together a blog and free message board. So we'll see... *fingers crossed* I'll be doing actual web page design later this summer; maybe in August. I have a couple other people interested so maybe I'll have a group soon? Currently I'm transitioning between the school year and summer training, so my routine isn't fixed. In the fitness forum I have my summer program laid out; I plan to start it the middle of this week (still trying to tie up some loose ends at school and my job is up in the air). Once I get going on that I will get back to my usual updates here in the log. For today, I just did a ton of pushing, pulling, lifting of boxes, and climbing on furniture to try to pack up my classroom. Not a whole lot of physical work, but it was something.

Tuesday, 6/12: 45 minutes of yoga: asana practice focusing on waking up the joints in the hips, legs, and feet, plus power yoga flow with emphasis on upper body strengthening (lots of arm balances, such as crow pose, side arm balance, and crane pose, as well as tons of time going from plank to upward dog to downward dog in a continuous flow) Full ballet barre in pool. I'd forgotten how hard it was! Pullups in pool. I didn't count because I was too busy trying to find the right depth to be able to do them with some resistance--in the water they were super easy! I think I did like 25, so aside from developing coordination, I don't think they did much. I'll have to experiment with them some more. I also did muscle-ups on the side of the pool; did about 5, cheated a bit using my toes against the pool wall to boost me through a "stuck" spot, but I figure this would be like a wall climb in PK anyhow. I think I could do more but I was ready to be done in the pool. I'll do as many as I can do tomorrow, just to see. Swam about 4 laps (breast stroke) just because the sun was out and the water felt good. Not sure of the distance; the pool is definitely not olympic-sized. Just your standard garden-variety apartment complex pool. Tango lesson tonight; I'll let you know how it goes.

6/12:
oops, forgot: also did the following Pilates series today before going down to the pool:
The Hundred Roll-ups (5) Single leg circles (5x each direction each leg) Rolling like a ball (6x) Single leg "crunches" (they're not actual crunches but I can't remember what they're called--8x each leg) Double leg "crunches" (same disclaimer--8x) Straddle stretch (5)

The tango lesson was 'meh.' Fun in terms of dancing; not much of a workout. Still, I'll be going back for more. It was definitely fun!

6/13: Job interview today; The Big One(TM), so I spent most of the morning preparing my portfolio for that, mentally preparing, etc. I wanted to get some yoga/meditation in ahead of time but that was not to be, apparently. Afterwards, I went down to the pool and gave myself a full ballet barre and had every intention of doing muscle-ups on the side of the pool as well, since yesterday I'd done like 5 of them, and my arms weren't sore or anything today. I couldn't even get one muscle-up today! Guess I tired my arms out with the muscle-ups yesterday (or maybe yesterday's 5 was beginner's luck). Today's barre in the pool gave me a nice burn in my glutes and thighs though. Sweet. :-) I may do my yoga arm-strengthening series tonight, but it doesn't look likely. I took a 3 hour nap after my interview. I tend to "crash" after stressful situations. Still feeling pretty wiped. As mentioned in my summer workout thread, tomorrow is when my program starts in earnest, now that these things like the interview, etc. are out of the way. I think it went well, btw, if you're interested. I'll know in a few days.
