Finger-tip door jam pullups, with a jump if you need, trying to touch shoulder to door jam, palms facing eachother of course.

Do you have a portch beam you can tie a small rope too?

You don't have to have two points to connect; I used a single rope tied to the center of a small wooden dowel quite often.

None of these are pulling exercises. Hence, they wouldn't simulate anything close to a pullup.

----------------------------------

Trees are never too low. If you have to, bend your legs or learn L-sit pullups. If you can't do this, find some sort of wall you can do pullups on. Another alternative is if there is a staircase in your house you can hang off of the ledge and do pullups on that (but this is dangerous so be VERY careful and always have something soft around just in case you fall/slip. Jumpin Jiminy also has a few good ideas with door pullups or attaching some sort of rope somewhere.

Also, as a very last resort you can do rows which are similar to pullups just horizontal. I've used a dinner table for these on vacation before -- just hang with your legs underneath the table and your hands on the edge and do rows (e.g. pull yourself so your chin touches and then back to straight arm hang). These are less intense than regular pullups, but they work the same muscles.

Yes, they are upper body, and they do use the arms. But they are all pushing exercises, whereas a pullup is a pulling exercise. They recruit opposite muscle groups. A pushup uses triceps and chest, a pullup uses biceps and back.

Just cross your legs and pull them up behind you, or do an L-Sit, while performing the pullup. You should be able to deal with lower tree heights doing this. Hell, it's what I do.

Alternatively, buy some weights and do bent over rows, upright rows, and reverse curls. Or go to a gym and do the aforementioned, as well as pulldowns.

Also, look for somewhere you can throw a towel over something (someoen mentioned a rope) and doo your pullups with both hands hlding the towel, these are harder than normal pullups, a great exercise. Even people with a bar can mix these in for variety.
