Well, at the YMCA here there is a rowing machine.  It has a platform you push off with your legs, and a rope that you have to pull in a rowing motion.  I was wondering what kind of benefits, and gains this machine has because I really enjoy using it.

I don't know much but i've heard that rowing really kicks ass. I heard it was cardio and strength in one and I also heard it does a massive amount of core work.

Core, back endurance, some back hypertrophy depending on total power output per time... as you know olympic rowers have HUGE backs. Overall just a really good exercise like jogging.

...though much better than jogging. Rowing is probably the most effective "endurance" movement that you can participate in. It is also a great tool when combined with bodyweight exercises and weight training in circuit fashion. Overall,  a rower is the most-practical "aerobics machine" that you will find, which is why it's most often free in every gym you go to..it's not easy, so it's definitely not popular!

It is better because it uses a full kinetic chain movement. The row starts with a hip extension (glute / ham) then an upper body extension (core / abs) followed by back contraction, and finally an arm pull. This is all done with resistance, and when done with intensity pretty much "fires the body up". Think of the deadlift high-pull as an aerobic exercise, that's basically what a rowing machine does.
