I was wondering what people do other than parkour to supplament their training. I already train in the martial arts and I an going to start Gymnastics and take as many rock climbing lessons as I can get in to. So what has helped you?

Interesting that you call this "supplimental training" ... don't you just enjoy each activity for what it is? Yes, I think any physical fitness or porwess will enhance your Parkour ability and experience, but is Parkour the goal, or just another tool along the path to the goal of a fulfilled life?

Thats Interesting. I never thought of that. I am still going to do these (because I have always wanted to try both) Im kind of in a rut for things to do besides parkour and martial arts and am looking for someting to fill some time. So yea I do mean to take these for what they are and enjoy them without relating them to parkour. One of the major reasons I will be taking them is still to assist in my training, but I think I will enjoy them without it anyway without the parkour influence. But that was a really good point.. M2 you so smart Grin

I still want this question to go but think of it as stand alone things you would do anyway but that have helped your parkour training parkour.

hopefully this will help in my quest for something to do  Tongue

I would but alot of the wreslers really dont like me and the coach absolutely hates me. also I would probably resort instinctivly to my hapkido training and break someones arm.

Bummer, it's fun, and can be pretty useful in a brawl.  You could always make them like you by manhandling someone lol.

sounds like a challenge to me, get on the team, show the coach your dedication and drive, and he and your teammates will respect you.

Trust me, you won't.  I'm trained in Aikido and all the holds and locks that I've learned much shit all in the world of wrestling.  They can get out of ANYTHING.  Assuming they're good.  It's like trying to pit Aikido or Hapkido against Brazilian Jujitsu.  It just won't work.

if you have time to do these other things, just train more PK!!!!

lol j/k, more power to ya man, i like your idea of "supplemental training", im currently a red belt in TKD, i haven't been to clases in a while, but i plan to take alot of different martial arts thru out my entire life as long as i am able, once i finally have the time to go back and get my black in that, im gonna move onto Aikido, then hopefully some form of judo or kung fu.

Yeah, I was going to say that I would like to see you try and break my arm but I didn't want to sound cocky lol.  If you want to view the effectiveness of wrestling watch the ufc, you can see an incredible difference in someone who is not the best wrestler when they fight someone who is primarily a wrestler.  It is so different from any form of martial art, the closest things would probably be brazillian ju-jitsu and maybe judo throws, but if you don't think you will enjoy it you probably won't.  It's usually you either love it or you hate it, but I advise everyone to try it at least once if they have the choice.

I don't love or hate it.  I just recognize its utility and so I train it.

Well you are a smart man my friend.  My comment about loving or hating it was more referring to competetive wrestling and mostly due to the fact that a lot of people cut large amounts of weight and it's not exactly the most enjoyable part of wrestling.

That's why I quit wrestling in high school...loved the sport, but not as much as eating.

Zeus, I do trail running, rock climbing, hiking, Olympic Weightlifting, gymnastic skills, sprint training and Parkour amongst a million other things. And I tend to think along the lines of Mark, this is just one piece of a puzzle that is put together for even greater goals of full-body and environmental mastery. Parkour definitely isn't the end result of anything that I do Cheesy

Yea Ive been thinking alot about this lately and I like to say I think of it that way too now

I think along with rock climbing and gynastics (which I am really exited about starting) I want to pick up some weight lifting and I may join a track event. Im thinking about either the shot put , long jump, high jump, or sprinting.

Back to the wrestling team. The reasons I wouldn't start is because <rant>

1 when I said they didn't like me I really mean they hate my guts( two of them beat me up in the sixth grade (pre martial arts) because I was a nerd) and would find a way to get me off the team.

2. our school is really unsanitary and alot of the wrestlers get really sick because of it. My principal let the football team (many of the football players wrestle) play a game with an active staph infection, without telling the other team and gave it to three other schools. It went around the school for about two months with five kids in the hospital an twenty others infected. No health inspectors came because they would have to close schools and that would mess up the football schedual.

3. My hapkido instructor would disavow me if I joined the wrestling team. </rant>
