Someone has proposed removing escalators that are less than 30 feet in Dc metro stations. There would still be at least one up and one down escalator in each station.
They claim the cost savings would be $51,000 per year per escalator. I Think the cost savings would be much greater, factor in that people would have to walk (gasp!) up or down stairs TWICE a day ... oh the agony!! - BUT think about the health benefits, yes, even of walking stairs twice a day, that may be the most exercise they get all day!
If you've ever been to a large train station in NY, you can see people LINED UP for sometimes 100 feet or more to get on a 25 foot escalator when there are two OPEN stairways right there.
And people wonder why they are obese and get heart disease and why nursing homes are overflowing with people who can't care for themselves?
/rant
Tell me what you think.

I think it's a great freaking idea. Although, as you said, people will still probably line up for the escalators. I remember when Gear and I were waiting for Skynative at the airport when we got together to film Tutorial I, we were waiting by a broken escalator which was right next to the elevator. And it was unbelievable how many people would walk up to the broken escalator, kind of shuffle to a stop and contemplate it for a second, make a short step forward, look around, see the elevator, and then backstep and walk to the elevator.
Anyhow, I think anything that'll make people walk is a good idea :p Take the stairs, park further away from the store, go for a walk.

I think it's a great idea. If it were up to me I'd remove all of them. Why not take away the means for a city to become lazy and obese? The New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene proposal to restrict/remove trans fats from all NYC resteraunts. I'm extremely against ANY gorerning agency controlling details in our lives, however, people as a whole (in masses) are stupid herds of cattle that need to be told what to do. Then you have those individuals that think for themselves and dont need the government to tell them to eat healthy and stay active because we are intelligent enough to do that on our own. Maybe when they take away the escelators and people are forced into the more exerting path they wont look at us with stupid faces for efficiently moving through those paths

Why not take away the means for a city to become lazy and obese? Because if everyone was fit, we wouldn't be so unique, just conformists. /joke

the escalator is worthless to me, and though most people don't need them there are those in such bad shape they have no choice [injured or decrepped]. Also I would never want to take away someone right to behave as they want even if they want to remain unhealthy; This is America. THAT SAID
I don't want my money paying for lazy man staris to the tune of 50K an escalator!

But you already know how much NY-ers walk already. Give em a break hehe

I'm mixed. The really LONG esclators in the DC Metros that just stretch on endlessly are really annoying. I've WALKED those esclators and needed to take a break in the middle and just ride it because they're four times the length of a normal esclator.

I agree with all of the sentiments posted above but I think we are forgetting about all of the cool stuff that can be done on them. I saw vid yesterday of a guy doing a handstand on the way up. What about running up the downward escalator? Repetitive uphill sprints anyone? What about an endless slinky walk down the upward escalator? Any other fun things that could be done on them besides walking up on your hands?

although i belive that this is a great idea and its about time that they actually start making people so somthing for themselves i do agree with Jumpin Jimmy.... ever scene anyone do a superman down the rails of the escalater.. thats pretty funny stuff... heck if it wernt for handicap accesability reasons i would say that they should get rid of elevaters as well... but oh well

I'm personally all for the removal of escalators, here! All but those 4-billion feet ascents from metro-mines. Do you know the ones I'm talking a/b? I think Animus Light does. The ones that give you vertigo when you look down them from the top. At any rate, though, the proposal Mark's talking a/b would not include those, so, huzzah.
Rant() { You know what really grinds my gears? When ppl get on an escalator and just stand on them. Come on, WALK up the damn things. It's 2x more efficient at LEAST (compared to walking stairs, not standing still on a slow-moving escalator. It seems it'd be MORE efficient then) to walk up 'em! It's so INEFFICIENT to stand on escalators! I say push 'em down the up escalator to get by. THEN they'll see WHAT'S WHAT!! };

i like the idea of getting rid of excalators less then 20 feet. however would they take them out because that could also be extremely costly. or the could just stop them. a non-moving escalator is just stairs right? so why not keep them.

The unreal is more powerful than the real, because nothing is as perfect as you can imagine it. because its only intangible ideas, concepts, beliefs, fantasies that last. stone crumbles. wood rots. people, well, they die. but things as fragile as a thought, a dream, a legend, they can go on and on.

Ok, lets turn them all off unless you have a mobility handicap or you want to do hill spints, oh yeah, or you have a slinky. It's the cost of electricity to run them that they are complaining about right? Let's add a coin-op turnstile to enter one.

Yeah, those things suck so much. WHY make them so long? I dont' see why they just didn't split it into three levels of esclators. One HUGE one? Wtf?
