the scarcety of locations is my reason for not doing them, but at the same time im still waiting for that perfect moment where the rail is on top of a 3 or 4 foot wall and has just enough room for me to sprint and underbar right onto the wall, thats really the only time i see underbars as efficient in time and energy, rather than climbing and vaulting, in a life or death situation thats what i would hope i would do. like heres my terrible picture attempt
_ |(top of raily) O _| (rail no horizontal bars inbetween) /|\ | (wall thingy, and te rail is only effed up looking to show the diff between it and the wall) /\ | (more wall woooo!) | | ___________|_______(bottom of wall wee!)
the only other time i do them is here (using your picture for the most part, lol) _ q | ← ← /|\ / _|_____________/\ ________ / | ▲ | _______ ___________|_______ (that odd thing is an attempt at a diagonal arrow, lol)

Most rails around here are either too low to warrant underbars, or have 3-4 horizontals with only a few inches between. I do practice underbars in a parking lot every now and then, but it's a crapshoot as to whether or not the lot is empty.
Moves in videos also tend to come and go in waves.

i think the hardest thing about underbars here in oklahoma is finding a place to do it!! there are a couple places i guess but its def really hard to do them with a 1 foot gap underbar haha!.. and they are hard as heck to make look good and keep flow with it as well

I have noted this too. I use them a lot. It's a very good move, and better on some rails than vaults.

I rarely get to do one when I make a line. But I practice them like crazy. Everytime I go to the park near the pull up bars I bring my duct tape. I'm always try to practice them love it! (I love the rail dance. I have also noticed that if you ask any traceuse whats her fav thing to do they'll norm say they love the rails... I love to flow on a whole bunch of bars especially when I come out with out any bruises )

If you think underbars aren't used much than you haven't trained with Tyson.

I think they're just awkward. I hardly ever find a time when I could move faster and more explosively under/through a rail as opposed to over. But thats just me *shrugs*

basically what yall are sayin is that they're inefficient. Well, thats why you train them and get better, smother, and faster with them. Thats pretty much what our discipline/art/sport is all about: training in order to progress, and bettering our selves and our movements.

I have noticed, watching european v american videos, european traceurs tend to use "moves" like underbars a lot more than we do here on the other side of the pond. Out of complete randomness, i love how traceurs is underlined as a misspelled word

I generally like to use lots of under/ through kind of movements when I'm working things through an environment, as well as the big powerful kind of underbars Zac talks about, definitely good stuff

Underbars are fun, and who says they're dying? Look at all videos, moves come and go like fashions in clothing, but all the really good stuff always stays around. Some vids. with underbars would be Daniel I. Showreel, Olegs Out of Time, One of the newer Trace Elements videos, The mini reel released by the European guy who's name I'm not going to try to spell, and the list goes on. I doubt we will ever live in a world where underbars are no longer used, I mean look at that District 13 underbar through that small window above the door, until everyone can do those underbars will need to trained!

Yeah I noticed that too. I think it has to do with a difference in culture. Just as the English language has changed and developed differently in all of the different places it is spoken, so has Parkour evolved and become unique to each region.
