For the longest time I have been able to land frontuck easily but I always land in the not really crouched bu more where my legs are parallel or 90 degrees when I land but I see other people getting more height and landing upright? could  it be a problem with not jumping high enough? or could it be that i am initiating the tuck to early and not stalling.

Augh this has been my problem too. And like when I kind of mess up, I end up slamming my heels into the ground which is not good. At least with more height, I'd end up landing just crouched. I think it's the arms but... idk.

Your guys' timing on this is PERFECT!

I figured this one out last night in the gym, from a friend of mine who has been practicing gymnastics for 8 years.  The trick IS in the arms, and the technique is called "setting".  Basically, as you leap forward into your block, start with your arms behind you.  DRIVE your arms forward, then up (a big circle, basically), WHILE you're punching the ground through your toes.  When you do it right, you really feel like you're carrying your momentum in your arms and throwing it upward.

My front tucks INSTANTLY went from low, shaky landings, to high, powerful, quick, and effortless!  To prove it, I completed my hugest front flip ever, over obstacles about 8' long and 2.5" high, and then over a single obstacle about 4' high.

I caught a vid of that, which I'll post if I can get my freaking computer to work.....

Yea, I'm a little confused... seems like throwing your arms forward would mess up any forward rotation but I guess I gotta see the timing on the motions.

Awaiting your video. Cheesy

I'll try to get that video soon, I can't get my software to work...blech...

The idea for the arms is to drive them forward with your momentum, down with your momentum (into the punch) and up into the jump, and the forward into the tuck...which feels like making a circle up, and then down with your arms...

Alright, finally got it!  I realize, now, how crappy this video is.  I'll try to make a better example clip soon...

But at any rate, you can see kinda how it goes.  Arms start behind, drive forward into the punch, then up, then throw them back forward for the rotation.  Good luck!

Danny's tut is pretty good. He could set higher with his arms, but he still gets mad height.

How about a video of the height when your not on a spring floor? I know I can jump like a foot higher on them so it doesn't really help lol

Lol...as soon as that kid gains another 20lbs, he's gonna facepant. His arm rotation is driving his momentum down as he's jumping up...wierd.

I'll try to take some film today in the lawn of some front tucks :-)
edit: it's raining  Angry  tomorrow....

Ah yes. gather around youngins and ol' jumpoff will give you a little lesson:

That last video posted by Alex was ok...that kid doesn't really know what he's talking about...but it was ok.
Despite his "advice" not to throw your hands forward, there are actually a few different styles for front tuck set-ups that can be utilized:

*the most common set you'll see is (what I know as an 'american set') is that where you bring your arms up behind your head on the set, and throw them forward and out upon leaving the ground. You see this most commonly in all front flips.  It helps create upward and directional rotation, and allows you to grab your legs and tuck. As seen here:
http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=6u_0CLNxR3g

*another type of set is called the "Russian set" which is what that kid is doing in his video.  The theory is to generate alot of potential centripetal force prior to taking off, so that you rotate quickly. As seen here:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jTN2g4diQ0I

*the final set type (although Im having trouble finding any videos on it) is the "chinese set," where your hands actually come from your stomach area, and shoot up and out on the take off.

Of the three, I like to do the regular and russian take offs.  I find the chinese one weird, and hard to generate any real power from it.

Just play around with them...find what's best for you.

However, don't forget another important aspect to having good front tucks; and that is BLOCKING:

good luck

For me all you have to do is do your setup except stall get you center of gravity as high as you can before you tuck and really throw your arms so your tuck is fast. And also tuck tight and with this advice you will have a very high front tuck.
