ONE LAST QUESTION I HAVE BEEN WONDERING...
What exactly is the roll supposed to do? Does it simply transfer pain or does it make it where you can not feel anything? I am a little unfamiliar of what I should be feeling and not feeling. I am a little guy with not a lot of muscle and I have rolled on concrete many of times, but I am just wondering if my shoulder hurts so bad because I am so little or what Wink (Although, I can lift my own body weight and pull myself up easily, so I guess that is an advantage -I also have a 2 pack LOL Grin-

Rolling spreads the shock your legs and body are absorbing from hitting into the ground, along the ground. So instead of getting hundreds of pounds of weight and shock being slammed into your joints and legs, you spread it along the ground so that you don't absorb any or very little of this shock/weight onto your body. A good roll also transfers downward momentum into forward momentum.

I just wanted to emphasize, in case I was unclear...you DO want your hands to contact the ground, and guide your weight over onto the sweet spot.  you DON'T want to tuck your hands in to your chest too quick and slam your back onto the ground.

Oh I got what you were saying, thank you and +1 rep to you Cheesy! This whole topic inspires me to just go for it and keep practicing! It is a fantastic opportunity to talk to such helpful individuals such as yourselves, so thank you and I am definitely becoming an active member on these forums! (CHECK OUT MY NEW BEGINNER VID COMING SOON AS WELL)

~Take care you guys!

There are 3 purposes for the roll, as far as I can tell:

-To clear an obstacle without contacting it (ie plastic construction fence too tall to hop over, wet cement...i dunno maybe a running broad jump would be more efficient, but you get the idea...)  This would be sprint-> dive -> roll....

-To convert massive downward force into forward momentum...This is when you drop from something tall, compress a bit on landing to absorb the initial impact, and spring forward into the roll.  Again, the idea is to smoothly transfer the momentum forward...

-To get under and obstacle smoothly...roll under a garage door, picnic table, what-have-you...

Oh, and no problem man, we're a family here!

Ok thanks man I really appreciate it!

You're welcome. Smiley

Yes indeedy. Smiley

I think dive rolling would be more efficient than broad jumping over a fence, because more energy is transferred up in a broad jump.  The less altitude your center of gravity gains, the less energy it takes to do something (I think...).

Also, this is a good video to watch in regards to rolling out of a large drop.  You can see it's really more of a jump forward than a drop down.  I'm still quite a ways away from trying this one in particular (and its definitely not something beginners should go out and try), but I try to apply the "jump forward" cue everytime I roll, even though its only ever on level ground.

But you dont want to go to fast and slam the front of youre shoulder into the ground its the Backside of youre shoulder on the muscley fleshy part.

Ok guys please do not turn this into a flaming thread!

Oh Eli, thanks for the video, that has to be the best video I have ever seen on the roll! I think my main problem is that I put my hand too close to my feet and I compress into the roll instead of making it like a spring! Thanks again man!

When my video comes out, I am going to include all the names that helped me in their so you guys better watch it lol (should be done in a week or two, I like taking my time editing in Sony Vegas)

Now be careful with the method in the video. Remember it's for more advanced users of the roll. Don't take big drops until you have it perfected on the ground from either a standing or crouched position. Another video to look at would be Urban Current's Roll Tutorial. Pay attention to how he leads into the shoulder, across the back, and where on the hip he comes out of the roll.

Try rolling from a one knee position in the beginning. Also, make sure you come out of the roll with the same leg as the side you rolled over. Roll over right side=push up off right leg

I see what you guys are saying, but I feel easier when I am standing in a grassy area and just leap far out like in the advanced video!

I have tried sitting in like the table position and rolling from their, but it just feels too natural for me. I guess I should practice that, but I am seeming to have an easier time when I go outside in my backyard and leap far out now!

A roll is not supposed to transfer pain. A good roll should be painless. Rolls' transferring of momentum is meant to avoid pain/damage. I'm a little guy too, but for me it's my pelvis. Had to sit down and practice coming out of rolls in different ways to figure out which method was best for me that wouldn't hit bone.

[edit]Also, just for kicks to see if it helps, you might try rolling from a handstand (parkour roll, not somersault). Or just bend over with your left palm on the floor and the back of your right hand. Put a very small amount of force on your right hand as you fall into your roll. Tuck your head and feel the force travel up your right arm, across your right shoulder blade, across your back, past your left glute, and into your right foot (which should be leading).
