Your best bet is to stay off it until it heals. Train your less dominant side while you wait, just don't get hurt again.

You probably tore your acromioclavicular joint.  This takes a while to heal, but if you have full shoulder mobility, you should be okay in 3-4 months.  For the first few weeks, take anti-inflammatories such as Aleve, ice it as much as you can and don't do any activities that put pressure on your shoulder/back.  Once the pain subsides, start reinforcing rotator cuff muscles with light weight dumbbells or elastic bands.  Do lateral and forward raises, external and internal rotation 3x/week.  An excellent method to tape up your shoulder can be found at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UhjnvDVzios
Hope you feel better soon!

you just diagnoses and treated someone you haven't even met.

he could just have a bruise for all you know.

he could have dislocated his whole damn shoulder.

don't you think this advice is a bit specific -- and maybe a bit too bold?

First off you can't tear the AC joint. You can only separate it or strain the ligaments.

Secondly, depends what he actually did. RC exercises are always good but it might not help the problem in this case. Seeing a doctor/PT/etc. to diagnose it is the best idea.

Thirdly, your exercise regimen is poor. Where's the pulling work especially horizontal pulling with scap retraction. Most people have poor posture and poor retraction/posterior shoulder strength. Your regimen has none and will exacerbate the problem (if that's even the problem... which we don't even know for sure!).

not to hammer you any more than you already did...

The shoulder has 3-7 joints in it, depending on who you speak to.  Like chris said, you cannot diagnose somebody based on what was described in his history, much less without seeing him.  And like steve said, giving an exercise regime, without knowing the problem could exasperate it.  next, SERIOUSLY?Huh? NSAIDS?Huh? for a few weeks?  without knowing what it is?  what are you trying to do?  kill his liver?

As for your answer thomas, we need more details.  If its truly muscular, taping will not help.  If it is ligament, taping will help.  If it is bony misalignment, bone bruise,  etc etc, neither exercise or taping will help.

You're only safe bet with the info we have is ice...
