I dont want to sound like a fool, but i was wondering if when you run up a high wall and you use your hands and like place them on the wall if this really helps you go more upward. Like i see people kick upwards and put their hands on the wall, like what is the technique for? I mean when i do it dosent make a difference whether or not i put my hands on the wall. If someone could just explain this please.

If you have your foot placement and technique down it really doesn't make much difference. I think most people do it to stay close to the wall. By touching the wall on the way up it gives you a mental note as to how high you are, how fast you're going, and whether you'll make it or not. It's just kind of a reflex thing. For instance...

That's a pic of me doing a pretty high wall climb in Philly. I'm going straight up the wall and I'm using my hand as balance and all the other things I said. Make sense?

For myself it's more of a mental response.  When I'm running head on into a wall, my hand gets thrown out just in case I hit the wall wrong.  That and a little stability.

When I kick up, I need to keep my hands at least in a similar position of touching the wall so that my body's in a good form to move upward.  It keeps my hips and head parallel to the wall on the way up.  I really do wish that I didn't have to hold the wall, it makes it hard to grab the ledge, but it's somehow necessary for me to move up with my hands in that position.

Hands help keep balance. I use my hands all the time to protect myself from hitting the wall in case I slip, and to guide myself up the wall. There are certain times when theres a small ledge that you can grab onto and use as a small boost but those times are minimal. You'll mostly use your hands as a safeguard  Wink

Yeah, not really a grip/boost issue. More just a guide. I think most people do this without even knowing it. On the other hand (or foot, for that matter) though, a second step will help. With the right technique it'll add another 6" to your wall run. A lot of people only take one step because it feels more natural that way. So, in most cases you have to consciously make yourself take that second step. Just one more way to fine tune your wall runs and milk them for all they're worth.

I think using my hand(s) mostly helps me keep my body straight and at the right distance and such to get good foot placement as well as a safeguard, thought it was funny in this one wall scale I did recently, I basically quadrupedal up the wall.

I do know that I use both techniques, the hand assisted and just like tac and reach the top. The wall has big effect (depending on surface, size, distance to, etc.) for me personally.
