Interesting article in the NY Times about rock jumping - a technique used by climbers to reach "unclimbable" peaks... eh, to me it's just a gap jump at an insane height.  Oh yeah, and incredibly reckless and life threatening.

http://www.nytimes.com/2008/07/11/sports/othersports/11jump.html

Sorry if this has been posted already (I have a tendency to be redundant in this particular thread).

“Broken ribs and damaged spines are fairly common.”

"Kops hollered a warrior cry and threw himself across the chasm. His sandaled feet landed on the opposite tower with a flat thud, and his ankle promptly swelled to twice its natural size. Kops could barely walk, but somehow this did not deter him from executing two more jumps."

This is the most asenine thing I've seen in a long time.  All the danger of rediculously huge drops without the discipline needed to survive them.  If you watch the video on that page, these people have absolutley zero jumping form, simply painful to watch.

No wonder their training starts with drinking beer.

Love it how the blond guy lands and cant walk and then he says, " I am ok, come on go"

This guys dont even have any jumping form. Anyway down to go there and show them off with some death defying precisions and cat leaps? lol

Oh my god.

"“Jumping requires fearlessness, a fair amount of agility, and a high threshold for pain"

You serious. This guys just remind me of the kids who start by jumping off of roofs.

This is an interesting sport. In the video, Petr Kops dosn't seem to have very good form(Maybe due to ignored injuries).

I would like to see what these guys do at ground level to train for those jumps. Unless they dont train at all. Then, I'd like to see what someone would be capable of with training.

True Adam, besides why is he rolling, you are suppose to take ALL the impact in your knees specially leaning specifically to one ankle.

No I learned the ankle doesn't even touch the ground. It's all about the QM, you just hand on your hands and knees. Distribution of force... duh?

"High threshhold for pain" Lucky him!  He can jump off high rocks like an idiot and hurt himself AND end up with permanent damage!  Poor guys.

LOL, I know Cedar Wright... we sponsor him.

I'll have to ask him about this... he's not insane... or stupid... he's a climber. I wonder if this was filmed before he knew about Parkour.

a couple things you all should bare in mind.

1. Drinking before climbing, especially for "Trad" climbers is not uncommon... is it smart? maybe not, but it is not uncommon and certainly not exclusively a part of this spire jumping activity.

2. These guys are jumping in rock climbing shoes... they have ZERO padding.

3. "Trad" climbers are known "hard men"... this for example doesn't seem nearly as crazy to me as the well known "Porch swing" on El Capitan...
