X chromosome would make sense, since it was my maternal grandmother who was Native American. My father was able to grow more facial hair than me, but I think my goatee gets longer that his beard did.

Check these guys out. You don't see these folks everyday, at least not in this isolated corner of the world.

Interesting...  Looks like Uyghurs ("Chinese Muslims" from the XinJiang province)?  I guess the genes there tend towards long, but not overly bushy beards?  Speaking of which, are there rules in Islam against shaving, or is growing facial hair more of a fashion / group identification thing?

yeah, some of these guys are Uyghurs, others are Hui.

and yes, it's forbidden for the men to cut their beards off as it is considered effeminate among other reasons.
