You're sure a protein shake won't fill this niche without me having to get two jobs to pay for groceries?

in my first days here I learned about diet and supplements.
Eating whole foods is the way to bulk up, and besides, Mark Rippetoe is a pro, I'd follow his advice, a protein may be added to your diet, but it's just a supplement, if you want to be an over achiever, mix your gallon of milk with protein powder, well.. pour a glass of milk and add the protein powder, and do that all day with your gallon of milk, I cant afford to buy the milk, but right now, I'm really focusing on technique, and not so much size, I've gotten stronger but not much bigger.

Follow the program to the "T" but feel free to "ADD" your protein powder, not "SWITCH" your milk for protein powder.

          lol, wrong and wrong.  Just thought it was a little humorous.  Man, I gotta agree on this one, though, a whole gallon?  Damn, that'll be hard to do every day.  I'd probably puke after a couple of days, I can't have suck a repetitive diet, especially after EIGHT MONTHS.

          I've got the same problem.  I barely eat anything and every time I attempt to put on some weight, there's not any good food around my house to eat.  I'm definitely getting a new job, though, so hopefully I'll be able to fix up my diet into something healthy.  Smiley

Does he specifically advise drinking a gallon of whole milk a day? The man must be the wealthiest man alive.

My mom loves super-healthy, low-fat, barely-qualifies-as-food food. I live with my mom. I'm on the other end of the stick.  Sad

if you want to put on weight its an effective method that has worked for something like tens of thousands of novice strength trainees

Don't think you can just start drinking gallons of milk and being big and strong -- you have to train too....with heavy weights.

Putting on mass for parkour in theory being detrimental is wrong.  In SS, you're only going to be putting on 20-25 lbs depending on how committed you are to the program and how long you do it.  I put on 22 lbs in 8 weeks.  It hasn't hurt my bodyweight exercises at all.  I threw in weighted chins into the workout mix for instance, and even with the 20 lb weight gain, my chin up weight also increased by 40 lbs.

For all the posts about drinking the milk, I present these quotes from the man himself:

Yes, it's expensive.  Thats $4 a day for a gal. of whole milk, but if you really want to get bigger, save up and shell it out.  It works, and I'm glad I went through so much milk.  Yes, it tasted awful after three days, but I stuck through it.

Also, it HAS to be whole milk.  According to the 30+ years of evidence collected by Rippetoe, whole milk has the best macro nutrient ratio to promote growth.

The gallon a day isn't permanent guys. You're talking about a couple months drinking a gallon a day and it is a very integral part of SS. Plain and simple, you WILL SEE RESULTS from this if you follow it correctly.

This is the only part of your post i disagree with Tongue  otherwise, much respect for a fellow SS'er.

Yes, milk costs $3-$4 a gallon -- thats $21-$28 a week.  But i can personally say that my ridiculous eating habits (used to eat 6 huge meals a day - steak, chicken, veggies, nuts, etc.) was much more expensive.  With a gallon of whole milk a day my appetite is ridiculously curbed.  I eat 3-4 very small meals now in addition to the milk.

I would actually say my food bills went down since i started SS.


The gallon a day isn't permanent guys. You're talking about a couple months drinking a gallon a day and it is a very integral part of SS. Plain and simple, you WILL SEE RESULTS from this if you follow it correctly.


Another extremely good point.

If you continue to drink the milk after your novice stage of training is complete, you will actually see yourself get chubbier.  BF%'s tend to go up if you drink this volume of milk daily as an intermediate, according to rip's experience.

This is temporary -- for what is usually a maximum of 9 months for real neophyte trainees.

9 months out of my 76 year life expectancy is nothing for the benefits ill see

          That's why I didn't say anything about the cost, I'd probably throw up from just the milk!  I can't handle that much food (or fatty drink), though I think I'm going to look into this a little bit more.  Like you said, if it's really that effective, the results are very worth it compared to the dislike of the whole milk thing.

          Stupid as it is, the whole (pun) milk thing has really sparked my interest in the regiment.
