Well, it is aerobic exercise isn't it?  Do you exert energy while swimming?  Do you feel like you are getting a workout?  Usually if you ask these types of questions about any activity it becomes immediately obvious if it would help with your fitness level, including parkour.

It's a little like asking if running is good for parkour: it's exercise, isn't it?

i can personally say yes it does. just like other aerobic workouts do.

I am a state swimmer and so are all my friends that do parkour. we all love parkour because just like in swimming, it works every muscle in our body and the commitment and determination it takes to do both. In swimming, every muscle is used, and we cant say that for many other sports, but it is the exact same in parkour.

doing swimming is great for parkour, but doing parkour is even better for parkour  Wink

I like to follow a lot of Methode Naturelle style of training, so my answer to you is this:

If you get thrown into a lake... will you sink or swim?

My question is.... Is swimming parkour? What if everything you've ever desired was on the other side of an ocean, lake, retension pond etc?

Just precision from one beach to the other. Easy.

 Sarcasm - Akh

Parkour's roots lie in the Natural Method, without those roots we have a lousy system of movement, so yes. Swimming should be considered Parkour.

It's the only thing I've been doing longer than Parkour, and its such a great workout.

Yea swimming really is good for so many things. Even when trying to run around in waist deep water its a lot harder then normal and makes you work harder. I haven't swam much in awhile, but I probably will swim more this summer as well as doing plenty of parkour.

So at least amoung us parkour should involve swimming and vis-versa... I had a feeling it was. Yes I am quiet aware of George Herbert's Naturelle methode. Running, jumping, climbing, swimming, quadrupedal movements, throwing, defense, lifting, equilibrism, walking. Woo thats a mouth full!

The aerobic part of it is the only thing I think that benefits parkour. The muscles are being used differently than in pk, which allows for specificity. If you think you are getting better from swimming, by all means go at it.

This is all good to hear, since I live where its about 100 degrees everyday, I swim alot. Just starting my parkour training, I already feel like I can do alot from the start since im in excellent shape. Too bad its raining today and im stuck running and jumping down the stairs in my house because im anxious!

any form of movement is good for parkour. not only does swimming work just about every muscle in your body, but what if one day you finally found yourself in a grave situation in which you needed to utilize your parkour training, and then suddenly... a body of water...  Shocked

basically, like has already been said: if your goal is to move from point a to b as efficiently and quickly as possible then wouldnt moving through water be part of that? just being another obstacle to overcome

Grin I could see the thread was heading a little wayward.

But like I said, pretty much any exercise is good.  Swimming works a lot of muscles that don't get much attention otherwise, and it is the only real way to increase your lung capacity (due to the greater pressure exerted on your lungs) which can help in breathing and endurance so....yeah! It's good!  Smiley

Swimming is good for EVERYTHING!!!

It's the only thing I've been doing longer than Parkour, and its such a great workout.

the convenient part is that the biggest exercises in swimming directly benefit movement and strength in parkour.  all overhand swimming methods directly help climbing skills, and the strength gained helps to do all kinds of vaults, not to mention the fact that it gives you the flexibility to do them.  the leg workouts given through swimming will give you the endurance needed for long distance running, and the core training directly applies to vaults, climbs, and all motions with bringing your knees to your chest, like precision jumps, cat leaps, rolling and monkey vaults.

so, is it just me, or do swimmers and traceurs have alot in common?
