ok first off just because your in a gym with lots of padding etc does not mean you are invincible. very serious injuries have resulted from this mindset and some of the worst injuries i have seen/heard of have occurred in padded gyms. thats said it is much safer to practice in a gym with pads rather than over concrete. just dont get the im in a gym so i cant be hurt mindset.

next the best way to learn a backflip and build confidence is to get a good spotter. find someone who at least remotely knows what they're doing. go introduce yourself to the cheerleaders if you have to and ask them to spot you  Wink. seriously nothing can replace the usefulness of a knowledgeable spotter. even after they stop physically spotting you they can watch you when you go on your own and give you more pointers.

Thank-you Rob,
Ya a lot of injuries have occurred in gyms probably because of that mind set "I'm invincible". I haven't had the time to go to a gym and learn how to flip yet, but when i start I'm going to go over the form in a foam pit (safety first). Foam pit is probably the safest place to learn anything but make sure you know how to swim haha the foam pits are impossible to get out without a rope. oh my god im going to get some left over chinese from the fridge...Sorry bout that thats incredibly random haha! well best of luck!!!

well we've all established that the gym is the best way to learn it.

what you need to learn first, is a normal standing backflip. get an instructor at the gym to help you properly and safely learn to do a standing backflip. the day you stick one and can consistently do one with out help, is the day you overcome your fear of doing backflips. so repitition and commitment.

second. a backflip on the ground is different from a height. i find it easier to keep my legs straighter while performing a backflip from a height because i can spot the ground easier than opposed to tucking hard in a standing backflip.

go try them out yourself. but be careful and be safe!

Read, memorize in head, and watch a ton of videos. Then just do it  Wink

leon are you serious? Thats the best way to get somebody injured. Never watch a video and memorize it and then attempt the back flip thinking well since he can do that must give me invincibility to try it myself. You always want to think safety first, all of the bad injuries come from people not caring about the safety sometimes even their lives. I would highly recommend going to a gym and have another gymnast spot you.
