St. Helen's Parkour with four high school friends who wanted to move. In three short years SHPK has grown to 43 members 20 of which are active every week. Members range in age from 11 to 22 years old.
The members all have various backgrounds explained one member. “Some of us come from soccer, some of us come from Xbox. We’re not all athletes,” said Daniel Brogli, one of the group’s original members.
When asked about Parkour he said “We view it as the art of motion rather than as an extreme sport,”
The article stressed that not many members have tried "stunts" like flips.
One member that had, Garrett Kessner, explained what he did to mentally prepare for one. “Before I go I just have to clear my mind, get in the zone,” Kessner said. He focuses on one thing – usually getting distance – and then takes off.
Brogli explained also explained that fear is an important element in Parkour
“A lot of people say, ‘You guys are fearless.’ Actually, it’s the opposite. We’re fearful. If we’re not, we’ll get hurt,” he said.
To date the club has only received two major injuries, a fractured foot and a broken arm.
Josh Aday says feels that Parkour is "a lot safer than skateboarding or BMX,”
SHPK said it occasionally gets asked to leave a location, but usually aren't hassled.
“We respect our environment because if something is damaged, we can’t come back. We respect stuff and if we’re asked to leave, we leave,” Brogli said.
